The Mar Thoma Christians were infuriated by the harshness of the Jesuit missionaries in their effort to carry out decrees of the Diamper Synod, and by the news that Bishop Mar Ahatalla, a representative of the Eastern Patriarch was killed by the Portuguese.
In 1852 Mathews Mar Athanasius was confirmed by Royal proclamation as the Metropolitan of the Malankara Church.
The Mar Thoma Church retained its oriental form of worship and practices, and added to it a missionary zeal gained from study of the open Word of God and encouraged by the work of western missionaries.

Thomas tradition of founding the Indian Church in A.D. In course of time the infant Church that took roots in the Kerala soil had registered tremendous growth in the various parts of the Southern State of India.
This church was formed in 1981 as one of the four parishes into which the Mar Thoma Congregation of Greater New York was divided.
Later a joint congregation of members of the Mar Thoma Church and the Church of South India (CSI) was formed in Manhattan, New York and the Queens congregation was discontinued.

St. Thomas, the Apostle of Jesus Christ is believed to have landed in AD 52 in Cranganore near Cochin, which was at that time an important seaport on the Malabar Coast, having trade connections with the Middle East in those days.
It is believed that St. Thomas proceeded to the East coast of India and died a martyr’s death at a place called St. Thomas Mount, and was buried at Mylapore in Madras.
The Mar Thoma Tehological Seminary (Estd: in 1926) and 6 other institutes cater to the theological education of both the clergy and the laity.
