Latin “maras” (the word “mara” is Spanish for “gang”;) are merely the latest in a long line of immigrant gangs —; including Irish, Chinese, Jewish, Italian and, more recently, Vietnamese and Russian — to spring up in American slums.
It is important to understand that the widely discussed Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) is a product of this American gang culture and not, as it is sometimes portrayed, a Central American export.
