Maralinga is a tract of Aboriginal land in the state of South Australia that was commandeered by the Australian government to be used by Britain for the development of atomic bombs.
Seven atomic bombs were exploded at Maralinga; perhaps 25% to 30% of the plutonium in those devices would have been fissioned.

At least 26 of the 76 people named as being exposed to radiation from tests in 1956 received a dose greater than the "maximum permissible exposure" of 0.3 roentgens in a week; the highest exposure was 0.66 roentgens in a few hours, the central command document reveals.
Veterans of the Maralinga tests have described trucks speeding past to raise dust to make sure military personnel "got a bit of the fallout over the top of us," and being ordered to uncover equipment shelters located 100-150 meters (325-490 feet) from ground zero about one hour after a test, without protective clothing.
The ongoing scandals surrounding the Maralinga project are of interest to the vast majority of South Australians who are opposed to the federal government's plan to build a national radioactive waste dump in South Australia.

The second stage was the treatment of debris burial pits by excavation and burial and by in situ vitrification, a process that involved passing an electric current through electrodes in the ground to melt debris and incorporate the material into a vitrified monolith or glass/ceramic block.
Unfortunately, difficulties were encountered applying the in situ vitrification technology at Maralinga and it was decided not to continue with the application of that technology due to safety reasons coupled with the particular difficulties of applying the technology in an isolated area such as Maralinga.
