Marathon County is a county located in the state of Wisconsin.
The racial makeup of the county is 93.84% White, 0.28% Black or African American, 0.35% Native American, 4.54% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races.
In the county, the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 29.50% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 13.00% who are 65 years of age or older.

Marathon, the second-largest town in Brewster County, is located on the Southern Pacific Railroad at the intersection of U.S. highways 90 and 385, twenty-six miles southeast of Alpine in the northern part of the county.
Marathon was the principal shipping point for most Brewster County ranchers because its location in the relatively flat Marathon basin was more accessible to cattle than Alpine.
Marathon was not destined to become an oil boomtown, and the estimated population varied from 750 to 1,000 for the next two decades.

Marathon County officials plan to create a list of conditions that the American Transmission Co. must agree to before the County Board votes on whether to grant the power line company permission to build part of the line in Nine Mile Recreation Area.
The County Board overwhelmingly adopted a resolution in 1999 opposing the power line, which is slated to run from Duluth, Minn., to Rothschild.
The Marathon County Board also voted 19-12, with one person abstaining, in 2002 to deny Wisconsin Public Service Corp. access to county land to conduct land surveys, forcing the utility to consider suing for access.

 Wausau - County inks deal to allow power line at Nine Mile
Marathon County officials signed an agreement Wednesday with the American Transmission Co. that allows the company to build the Arrowhead-Weston power line through Nine Mile Recreation Area.
The County Board voted 23-12 on Aug. 24 to permit the company to build the 345,000-volt line after ATC and the county had crafted an agreement on the line last month.
County Administrator Mort McBain said the county will not use the money until later next year and plans to form a committee to discuss how to spend it.

Marathon County officials say they might have to cut as much as $5.3 million from the county's budget this year and $8 million over the next three years if the governor's recent proposal to fix the state's budget crisis is approved.
But the county in February approved a selective hiring freeze, a moratorium on all new contracted services and programs and a review of all capital-improvement projects to help slash $5.3 million from the county's 2002 budget.
Two candidates running for previously contested seats on the Marathon County Board will be running uncontested after one challenger withdrew from the race and the other died.

The feature events are the 5k and half marathon, with 300+ runners each, while the marathon attracted about 60 runners.
The marathon runs two laps of the half marathon course with the first lap concurrent with the half marathon, so it gets a little lonely the second time around.
