Marathon County was formed from a larger county called Portage, in 1850.It originally encompassed all of what is now Marathon County, Lincoln County, Oneida County, and parts of others.
Because the exact center of the Western, American half of the northern hemisphere, the spot where the 45th parallel and the 90th meridian meet lies in Marathon County, we say that Marathon County is the heartland of America.

Spickler Landfill is a former landfill located in the southwestern corner of Marathon County, Wisconsin, three miles northwest of the City of Marshfield.
Spickler Landfill is in Marathon County, Wisconsin and is situated in the northwest ¼, southeast ¼, Section 33, Township 26 North, Range 2 East, Town of Spencer, approximately four miles south of the Village of Spencer, and three miles west-northwest of the City of Marshfield (Figure 1).
This branch of the pipeline was constructed through Wisconsin during 1968 and 1969, prior to the opening of Spickler Landfill.

In response to the HARP recommendation for a health statistics review, the Wisconsin Division of Health conducted a search of the Wisconsin Cancer Reporting System for cases of mesothelioma (see Health Outcome Data Evaluation).
The Spickler Landfill public health assessment was prepared by the Wisconsin Division of Health under a cooperative agreement with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).
That portion of an individual's total exposure to a chemical that is attributed to drinking water, and is considered protective of noncarcinogenic health effects during a lifetime exposure.
