Marathon Man - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Marathon Man is a 1974 paranoid thriller novel by William Goldman that was made into a 1976 film directed by John Schlesinger.
The story is about a former Nazi SS dentist from Auschwitz, Dr. Christian Szell (presumably modelled, at least in part, on the real-life Josef Mengele), now residing in Uruguay, trying to smuggle a large quantity of diamonds out of the U.S. This involves an ultra-secret intelligence agency called "The Division".
In 1976, Marathon Man was made into a film starring Dustin Hoffman as Babe and Laurence Olivier as Dr. Szell.

At a little bit over two hours, "Marathon Man" would probably be trimmed to be even faster paced for today's audiences, yet, I felt that it still moves along at a crisp enough pace to be enjoyable.
"Marathon Man" is no different, as the picture remains suprisingly free of print flaws; there's a few speckles now and then, but certainly less than I'd expect for a picture that's over 20 years old.
Final Thoughts: "Marathon Man" is remains a terrific thriller with superb performances across the board.

If Marathon Man is more well known than most other paranoid thrillers of the seventies, it's because of that torture sequence, one which had thousands of viewers rushing from the cinema clutching their mouths in shock.
Much of the fun of Marathon Man comes from unravelling the various plot strands so I will not say too much more about the story apart from suggesting that this is a rare case when the needless convolutions of the plot add to the enjoyment of the film rather than detracting from it.
I don't think Marathon Man is a particularly important film, nor as politically insightful as some people have claimed, but it is first class entertainment done with as much style as you could want.

"Marathon Man" is often considered a classic of the thriller genre, and it certainly is. It has its flaws, and sometimes it seems a bit average from a technical viewpoint, but it set the stage for many gritty, coarse thrillers that would follow in later years.
Two very important films of Dustin Hoffman's career came out in 1976: "All the President's Men" and, of course, "Marathon Man." They are both universally regarded as some of his best work, and it's not a surprising fact, really, since it's true that they really *are* some of his best work.
"Marathon Man" is cold, hard, gritty and dirty, and one of the best of the genre.
