Marathon (sport) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The name "marathon" comes from the legend of Pheidippides, a Greek soldier who, according to legend, ran from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon, and died shortly after.
World records were not officially recognised by the IAAF until 1 January 2004; previously, the best times for the Marathon were referred to as the 'world best'.
The world record time for men over the distance is 2 hours 4 minutes and 55 seconds, set in the Berlin Marathon by Paul Tergat on September 28, 2003 (ratified as the world record by the IAAF on 1st January 2004), an improvement of 20 minutes and 44 seconds since 1947 (Marathon world best progression).

 Marathon (sport)
Although the name marathon is sometimes used to describe any athletic event of great length, or requiring great endurance, the word is most often used to describe a running race (long-distance track event) of 42,195 m (26 miles and 385 yards).
The 1908 Olympic marathon in London was originally set for 26 miles, but the race organizers added 385 yards to the course in order to have the runners start in front of Windsor Castle.
World records were not offically recognised by the IAAF until the 1st of January 2004, previous to this date the best times for the Marathon were refered to as the 'world best'.

 News: gender gap in sport
For example, Ward and Whipp (1992) predicted that the men's and women's marathon world records would be equal by 1998 and that women record holders would catch up with men in shorter distances early in the 21st century.
The marathon is still showing a narrowing of the performance gap in the 90s, owing to slower performance by males (from an average time of 2:11.30 to 2:14.21), as female times are unchanged (2:30.02 vs 2:30.17).
If the marathon is excluded, the mean performance gap for the six other running events has increased from 11% in the mid 80s to 12% in the mid 90s.
