  Marble Canyon
The rock wall on the canyon's north side is higher, at up to 3000' above the lakes, while the south wall is around 1000'; the valley floor's elevation is around 3500'.
The landscape in the area is a limestone karst, from which it may be inferred (perhaps in error) that at one time the canyon was a huge cavern or chain of caverns that eventually collapsed and became further eroded; even today, Pavilion Creek disappears underground shortly after leaving Pavilion Lake, re-emerging a few miles down-valley.
Some of the side canyons on the north wall are very deep and are largely unclimbed and unexplored.

The Marble Canyon Lodge is stunningly situated in a deep, wide canyon between the majestic 3000-foot sheer Vermillion Cliffs and the Colorado River gorge, along a remote stretch of the Colorado at the very northern reach of Grand Canyon National Park.
The Marble Canyon airstrip’s canyon setting and relatively short narrow runway (3715’ by 35’, with scruffy desert vegetation narrowing the usable width by several feet), makes it a moderately challenging destination — perfectly adequate for most GA aircraft and pilots, but with very little margin for error, and ruthlessly unforgiving of unprepared or sloppy pilots.
The Marble Canyon Lodge Restaurant is open seven days a week during the summer tourist season, serving breakfast from 6 to 11, lunch 11 to 5, and dinner from 5 to 9:30.

Lees Ferry and the Vermilion Cliffs, Arizona
Marble Canyon: Officially, Lees Ferry marks the beginning of the Grand Canyon, as the land slopes gently down to the west side of the river but after a short distance downstream there are cliffs at both sides which become steadily higher as the Colorado flows south.
The Ferry is 15 miles south of Glen Canyon Dam which was completed in 1963, flooding a large area of remote desert, including most of Glen Canyon which was said to rival the Grand Canyon in its grandeur.
The section of canyon south of the dam is thus the only remaining part; boat trips are available down this too, allowing people to have some idea of what has been lost.
