Protopterus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The African lungfish are the genus Protopterus and constitute the four species of lungfish found in Africa.
The African mudfish, or lungfish, can live out of water for many months in its burrow of hardened mud beneath a dried-up streambed.
, 2002 mentions that the taste is such that it "is locally either highly appreciated or strongly disliked." As technology advancements such as longlines and gillnets have been increasingly applied in the Lake over the past fifty years, it is believed that the lungfish populations there are decreasing.

There was a high rate of urea synthesis, because of the thin layer of mucus which permitted amlpe O2 flow, nessessary for the high energy needing process.
The mechanisms that set estivation are poorly understood, but this process enables the prolonged survival of the lungfish without water or food for months, even years (Fishman et al.
(2002) conclude similarity between lungfish skin and lungs and amphibians', therefore suggesting convergent evolution due to similar pressures on aquatic animals that are spending time on land.

clew's reviews: a book log: Darwin's Ghost, Steve Jones
Lungfish are living fossils: animals with an agile and creative past the nowadays have sunk into conservatism.
Now, the lungfish are stuffed with DNA (most of it with no apparent function) and their evolution has stalled altogether.
Well, the Genome Size Database lists the marbled lungfish as having the largest known genome in a chordate/vertebrate (and some pufferfishes as having the smallest known).

Therefore the lungfish gas bladder or lung is much more ancestral (or 'primitive') than the Anabantoid labyrinth organ, which is much more derived (or 'modern').
Lungfishes are members of the Class Sarcopterygii, or the lobe-finned fishes, whereas most other fishes that most people are familiar with (except the sharks) are part of the Class Osteichthyes, or ray-finned fishes.
Lungfish are the most famous of the fish capable of aestivation but they are not the only ones.

Lungfish are members of a group of fish called the fleshy-finned fish, or Sarcopterygians.
Look at the African and Australian lungfish at the zoo and see if the pelvic fins in both these fish are similar to their pectoral fins.
However, the fish is also somewhat similar to a lungfish because the pectoral and pelvic fins have a fleshy base.

In no way are these qualities obscuring the album as a whole; on the contrary, something so dark can keep a closely-guarded beauty within, a beautiful power many may not be able to witness or comprehend.
Buzzing minor chords, a funereal beat that persists without becoming lumbering, a stiflingly huge bass riff, and that good old Lungfish simplicity of purpose gather and flow.
Then, with each successive track, a theme develops: resignation to an abstract chaos (be it love, paranoia, blind belief, maybe life itself) reappears as a touchstone lyrically, all the while the music spins out of control, shoveling Daniel Higgs' insights at you, unable to let up, culminating in one huge outburst of pain after another.

(Note: The values for African lungfish species reported by Vervoort (1980) should be considered significant underestimates, since his Feulgen protocol involved only a 120sec hydrolysis in 5N HCl.
Probably no causative association between large genome size and aestivation in lungfishes (see Gregory 2002b).
Genome sizes are secondarily increased in lungfishes, as shown by fossil cell size data (Thomson 1972).

My question is...Does anyone have any experience keeping these and would you suggest getting one?

A: Heidi Parker, Ph.D.: According to www.genomesize.com the largest animal genome belongs to the marbled lungfish.
