Although her husband, Henry, was often an invalid, he and his sons became early entrepreneurs with two sawmills, a veal ranch, a bulb farm with narcissus, daffodils and tulips, a lilac nursery, and a truck farm where he grew garden fresh vegetables that he sold as far away as Seattle's Pike Place Market.
