Marc Almond - Gay Times, April 1993
By Almond's standards, it was remarkably good-humoured affair, an acid-free trip down memory lane with a full orchestra, troupe of scantily-clad dancers and barely a tortured soul routine to speak of.
The "retirement" wasn't a publicity stunt (Almond was never as cool nor as calculating as Bowie) but it did mark the death of a musical persona - Marc Almond And The Mambas, with whom he had produced some of his most experimental and emotionally-demanding work to date.
Marc Almond's latest single is 'What Makes A Man A Man?', a live cover of an old Charles Aznavour track, dedicated by Almond to "all those who have the conviction to be different in the face of adversity".

Almond made Enchanted without longtime keyboardist Annie Hogan or a human drummer; the use of both Fairlight synthesizer and an orchestra (not to mention brass players) creates a not entirely attractive tension between sterility and warmth.
Almond's singing and writing, however, are unpretentiously entertaining, uniting past notions with subtle cohesion and as little overt camp as the listener cares to enjoy.
Almond released three diverse singles in 1995: "Adored and Explored" introduces elements of techno, coupled with harmonica by David Johansen; "The Idol" is a Gary Glitter- style stomp about the nature of fame; and "Child Star" is a sweeping ballad worthy of Shirley Bassey.

If there's any acid test for being a Almond fanatic, it would have to be Torment, originally a double album and still the longest thing he's yet released.
It isn't so much length as it is subject matter, though informed by his consistent bitterness with the industry as experienced via the soon-to-implode Soft Cell, the sheer self-loathing and unrestrained anger have never been paralleled by any of his other releases.
Matched by an expanded Mambas lineup, including a string quartet featuring rock journeyman Martin McCarrick in one of his earliest appearances, Almond swings from slow weepers over lost innocence, sexual and otherwise, to frantic explosions of lyrical bile.
