Marc-Amable Girard - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Girard intended to run for re-election in 1878, but was opposed by a "citizen's committee" which argued against his continued double mandate.
Girard was probably at the height of his popularity with the French community during this period, securing a compromise on bilingualism and receiving guarantees on education and representation.
Girard was a member of the Senate until his death (on September 12, 1892), where he supported the Conservative Party.

Girard’s great misfortune was that his premiership coincided with continuous agitation by and on behalf of the irrepressible Riel, whose determination to take his seat in the House of Commons kept alive memories of the “troubles” only four years earlier.
Girard is reputed to have said, “I am the first French Premier of the Province, and it is my opinion I will be the last.” In Manitoba’s second general election, at the end of December 1874, Girard was elected by acclamation in St Boniface, now reduced from two members to one.
Girard was one of a small minority in the Senate who did not want the Legislative Assembly of the North-West Territories to have the power to regulate the use of French or English in its proceedings.

Marc Amable Girard was born at Varennes, Lower Canada, in 1822, the son of Amable Girard and Josephte Daunais Girard.
The change of the Canadian Pacific Railway from the narrows of Lake Manitoba to the south of the lake is in great part due to the efforts made by a special committee of the Senate which was formed at Girard’s request, and over which he presided during two consecutive sessions.
From 1879 to 1883 Girard was a member of the Norquay government, first as Provincial Secretary and then as Minister of Agriculture.
