The sonata by Heinrich von Biber (c.1644-1704) was one of eight that Biber published in 1681 attempting to curry favor with the aristocracy in Salzburg, where he was an instrumentalist in the Kapelle of Archbishop Maximilian Gandolph (and apparently they did the trick as Biber was named director of the Kapelle in 1684).
The "Manchester Sonata" by the Baroque master Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) was one of twelve sonatas found in the Central Library in Manchester, England, in 1973.
They had apparently made their way to England by an 18th century manuscript collector who had picked them up in Rome from the music library of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, for whom they were probably written.

They competed with each other in devising splendid scenic effects and in trying to attract star singers to their opera houses.
Given virtuoso singers, such composers as Marc' Antonio Cesti (1623-69) and Alessandro Stradella (1645-82) developed many different kinds of arias to show off different styles of singing.
Among this were the graceful, tender airs, long, flowing lines that called for the utmost in breath control; rapid bass airs, depending on the use of large intervals for humorous effects; coloratura solos and duets for sopranos; and folklike airs based on dance rhythms.

When the Baroque reached its prime and Italian opera began to take root in Vienna, the field of activities of the singers of the court chapel widened: now they were also expected to take part in private and nonspiritual entertainments sponsored by members of the Imperial family.
Thus the cast of the legendary performance of Marc' Antonio Cesti's opera II Pomo d'Oro in 1667 (the splendid stage designs by Ludovico Ottavio Burnacini have been preserved in a volume of copperplates by Matthäus Küsel) included a number of members of the Imperial Chapel.
Yet toward the end of the 18th century, under the rather tight-fisted Emperor Joseph II (1741-1790), there came a time when especially the boy's choir was threatened with disbandment.
