Marc Basnight (born 13 May 1947) is a Democratic member of the North Carolina General Assembly representing the state's first Senate district, including constituents in Beaufort, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Hyde, Pasquotank and Perquimans counties.
Basnight was born in Manteo, North Carolina and graduated from Manteo High School in 1966.
Basnight chaired the Dare County tourist bureau from 1974 to 1976, and was a members of the North Carolina Board of Transportation from 1977 to 1983.

Basnight said the North Carolina Senate is solidly behind education in the state, and he noted that the Tar Heel State still boasts some of the lowest tuition rates in the nation.
Basnight said he is concerned about the loss of 180,000 manufacturing jobs, especially in rural and urban areas of the state, which seem to be falling behind.
Basnight shared a few political reforms he would like to see, including longer terms in the General Assembly, session limits and caps on campaign spending for elections, down to the county commission level.

Marc Basnight flew from the coast to Cullowhee to deliver the keynote address at a summit, “Meeting Western North Carolina’s Needs Through Higher Education.” He spoke to several hundred of the region’s leaders at Western’s Ramsey Regional Activity Center.
Basnight said he agrees with a recent description by Western Chancellor John W. Bardo in which Bardo stated that there are two North Carolinas — one rich and one poor, with the poor regions located at the far ends of the state.
Basnight said he is aware that too many of the region’s young people have to go elsewhere to find work after they graduate from college.

A larger point county politicians have been coaxing Basnight toward is the widening of U.S. Highway 17 and the installation of a bypass around Washington to ease traffic congestion in the city.
Basnight told the crowd right-of-way acquisition connected to the bypass is scheduled to begin in 2004 "on the fastest pace that the permitting process" allows.
Basnight was able to expedite the bypass-construction timetable -- something no other lawmaker representing Beaufort County had done.

Rather than passing a clean pro-gun bill, the NC Senate Leadership, under the direction of Democrat MARC BASNIGHT (D-Dare, GRNC 1-star), have decided to throw yet another road block in the path of gun owners.
After the NC House cleaned it up by removing gun show language, Basnight's Senate is now refusing the bill a committee hearing.
SB 680 is bottled up in the Senate Judiciary II Committee, which is also sitting on HB 442 (a bill to establish reciprocity for concealed carry permit holders between states), HB 622 (a CLEAN bill to prevent abusive gun litigation), and HB 842 (a bill to exempt CCH permit holders from handgun purchase permit requirements).
