Bell's work finds roots here in masterful renderings, typography, and old-fashioned gags, but then grows into assemblages that bring his images into real space, and funny, seat-of-the-pants comic narratives that give his characters an inner life beyond the page.
Marc Bell, 32, lives in Vancouver, B.C., though he's been known to relocate.
A pullout poster of Marc Bell's work was featured in the January 2, 2004 issue of The L.A. Weekly, that described his work as "a riddle wrapped in a conundrum further wrapped in salty bacon." A group of fourteen drawings, "Gustun," will be included in the exhibition and the upcoming book, The Ganzfeld 4.

Asking Marc Bell about his recent move to acquire controlling interest in Penthouse magazine is like asking him what he had for dinner two weeks ago Tuesday.
Given the enormous recognition for the Penthouse brand, Bell formed a partnership for the acquisition, called it PET Capital Partners (as in, “pet of the month”) then led his team in amassing 89 percent of the magazine’s $50 million in bond obligations.
PET’s plan of reorganization was withdrawn on the eve of its confirmation by the bankruptcy court in favor of Molina’s plan, in exchange for Molina’s commitment to pay Bell $70 million: $10 million for 75 percent of General Media’s preferred stock and $60 million for the DIP loan and the bonds which PET held.

With its debt in hand--along with most of General Media's preferred stock--Bell made plans to transform the title into something a little less hardcore (over-the-top raunchiness was one reason posited for Penthouse's drop in circulation in recent years) and a little more like successful men's magazine Maxim.
As for his profit, Bell remains tight-lipped, saying only that the original deal to buy the debt was cut for "pennies on the dollar." The transaction is due to close in August.
