Marc Blank: The Programmer Behind Zork   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
Blank's personal interest in adventure games goes back to when he was an undergraduate at the Massachusettes Institute of Technology in the mid-1970s.
Marc Blank believes that one of the motivations for programming is to see if you can do something better than what's already been done.
Blank had by this time finished his undergraduate studies and was attending medical school at Albert Einstein in New York.

Infocom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Infocom was founded on June 22, 1979 by MIT staff and students led by Dave Lebling, Marc Blank, Al Vezza, and Joel Berez and lasted as an independent company until 1986 when it was bought by Activision.
Inspired by Colossal Cave, Marc Blank and Dave Lebling created what was to become the first Infocom game, Zork, in 1977 at MIT 's Laboratory for Computer Science.
Lebling and Blank each authored several more games and additional game writers (or "implementors") were hired, notably including Steve Meretzky.

 Dublin Core/MARC/GILS Crosswalk
For conversion of MARC 21 into Dublin Core, many fields may be mapped into a single Dublin Core element.
In the Dublin Core to MARC mapping, two mappings are provided, one for unqualified Dublin Core elements and the other for qualified.
MARC 21 fields are listed with field number, then two indicator values with field name/subfield name in parentheses.

MARC Field Definitions: Note: for the purposes of the following table, the subfield introducer code (Hex 1F) is shown as a dollar sign ($).
If the MARC record grows larger than the preferred or exceptional record sizes, or larger than an internal server limit, the full text is truncated, and a 900 field is created with the message “Text Truncated”.

Marc Blank wrote the second version, and I maintained/hacked it; it was actually a legitimate test of a database system the group used for a research project.
Marc Blank was enjoying a respite from medical school; I had just finished my master's degree; Bruce Daniels was getting bored with his Ph.D topic; and Dave Lebling was heartily sick of Morse Code.
Marc, around this time, invented a new way of saving that cut the size down to something more reasonable, with the slight disadvantages that any new rooms or objects added to the old game would break existing save files, and that it never quite worked right anyway.

2001-06: Accommodating Non-MARC Language Codes in Field 041
Use of multiple MARC language codes in all of the subfields in field 041 is accommodated by "stacking" them in their appropriate subfields.
Because of the possibility of using different language code schemes in one record and the need for library systems to differentiate between these code schemes for processing purposes, it is proposed that field 041 be made repeatable to allow for different language code schemes to be coded in separate occurrences of the field.
It was noted in the January MARC Advisory Committee discussion that unstacked codes in complex records may be more difficult to visually read, which may prevent catalogers from coding the field under complex situations (This would, of course, be partially dependent on the way a system presented the field for input).

Marc Blank, born in 1954, was one of the authors of the original mainframe Zork in 1977, but before committing himself fully to the later founded Infocom, he followed his initial goal to become a doctor and graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
When Infocom ended it became quiet around Marc on the commercial software market, until in 1993 he teamed up with Mike Berlyn to found Blank, Berlyn and Co, which was later renamed to Eidetic, their very own company.
Marc left Sony in 2004, although he is still consulting for them.

MARC.pm : Machine Readable Cataloging Perl Module
Many MARC records are typically concatenated in a file, typically separated by a unique binary separator.
Leaders are the fixed-length preamble of MARC records defining structural information (position and length of fields, etc) and some information of bibliographic interest (enough to define format in the sense of BOOKS vs SERIALS).
The clear intent for LOC's effort is that standard MARC records are mapped to an adequate (X/SG)ML file, which is then handled by (X/SG)ML technologies, which are available for all major languages and environments.

I thought these blanks are when the screen reader gets to a cell in the layout table that only contains a spacer GIF with empty ALT text (ALT="").
But on listening to it again, the blanks do not match up with where these cells appear in the table.
I don't think that the blanks are always caused by empty alt text/empty table cells.

MODS to MARC Mapping (Library of Congress)
Since MARC 21 includes many more data elements than MODS, this mapping suggests a single MARC 21 equivalent for each MODS element, although there may be other equivalents.
Since MODS data is not as granular as MARC 21 data and some MARC 21 subfields are concatenated into one MODS field, some data may map to inappropriate MARC 21 fields or subfields.
The Leader is fixed in length at 24 character positions (00-23) and is the first field of a MARC 21 record.

In the mid-1970s, Infocom's eventual braintrust (Marc Blank, Joel Berez and Dave Lebling) met at M.I.T.'s Laboratory of Computer Science.
So, Marc Blank applied his artificial intelligence work and created ZIL (Zork Interactive Language), a "parser" which allowed the program to find associations between sentences and, hence, better understand what the player wanted to do.
Yet, Blank, Berez and Vezza had a hidden agenda that was already beginning to foreshadow changes at the company.
