Marc Ferrez (1843-1923) was a Brazilian photographer born in Rio de Janeiro.
Ferrez's life was dedicated to the art of photography and he is considered one of the greatest photographers of his time.
In 1865 Ferrez opened his own studio at Rua S. José, in the center of Rio de Janeiro, which was by that time the capital of the Brazilian empire.

Ferrez won gold medals at the Exhibition of the Century in Philadelphia 1876 and at the World's Fair at St Louis 1904.

Ferrez's beautifully composed views of the area around Rio de Janeiro were made primarily for the tourist market and are captioned in French.
They include the forests of Tijuca and Corcovado, the train on Corcovado mountain, the Public and Botanical Gardens (bamboos, palm and mango trees), the Palace at Quinta da Boa Vista, a cityscape showing the wharves and arsenal and a nearby church in Rio, and a curious rock formation at the beach in Niteroi.
Two of the images are collotypes, a photomechanical process first used in Brazil by Ferrez in 1892.

The Musée Carnavalet, that delightful hodge-podge of a museum devoted to Paris history (housed in Madame de Sévigné’s town house, it offers everything from Marcel Proust’s bed to rare historical documents from the French Revolution and much more), currently has no fewer than three new temporary photography exhibitions on, all of them worth a look.
For this year’s ubiquitous Brazilian theme, which Paris has zealously taken to heart during the “Year of Brazil,” the museum has a wonderful show of photos by Marc Ferrez (1843-1923), a Brazilian of French parentage.
A roomful of beautiful sepia images taken in the 19th-century show Rio de Janeiro as it was in the days before Miami-zation hit the city.
