Pierre-Marc Johnson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pierre-Marc Johnson (born July 5, 1946) is a Quebec lawyer, physician and politician.
In the leadership election of 1985, Johnson was chosen, following PQ founder René Lévesque as leader of the party and, consequently, as Quebec Premier, but was defeated by the Liberals, led by Robert Bourassa, in the Quebec election of that year.
The choice of Johnson was criticized by both leaders in opposition André Boisclair (PQ) and Mario Dumont (Action démocratique du Québec) because of the possibility of conflict of interest.

 Marc Johnson: Shades of Jade
Bassist Marc Johnson’s latest ECM release Shades of Jade is quite possibly the most gorgeous jazz album released this year.
On “Ton Sur Ton” Johnson and his supergroup come out with the cool jazz “Ton Sur Ton.” With its tight melodic line and restrained air, the piece is like an outtake from a great lost West Coast jazz session circa early ‘60s.
Nonetheless, the arrival of Marc Johnson’s clever “Blue Nefertiti,” a blues based on Wayne Shorter’s famous melodic line “Nefertiti” shows that this group can swing in a traditional sense, cementing a place for them as one of the best small jazz groups recorded in recent memory.

In an Ellingtonian vein, Johnson collaborated with Eliane Elias to draft and arrange songs that would specifically cater to the sensibilities of tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, guitarist John Scofield, and drummer Joey Baron.
Johnson’s reputation as a player on the scene was established during his tenure as bassist for Bill Evans’; piano trio in 1978-1980.
Initially, Johnson was drawn to Evans because the bass always had a versatile role in his groups.

 [No title]
In 1977, Marc Johnson was on the road with the Woody Herman Band.
Johnson appears on numerous albums recorded with Evans, including the Grammy-winning We Will Meet Again and, released in 1997, a six-CD box set of live recordings, Turn Out the Stars, weaving his distinctively warm tones and melodic lines into the complex harmonies of the Trio.
Many of Marc Johnson’s most notable recordings have been with guitarists; in addition to his long membership in guitarist John Abercrombie's trio, Marc Johnson formed two guitar-oriented bands that rose to prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

 Jelly review: Marc Johnson
Marc Johnson’s latest album continues the work he’s started on Bass Desires, using two guitars, drums and his own melodic bass to explore his original themes.
If you associate Johnson with the dark moody sounds of the ECM label, then this bright appealing set will be a complete surprise.
Johnson has absorbed the sound of masters like Scott LaFaro to create his warm round tone, but he knows his James Jamerson chops, too.

Enrico Pieranunzi / Marc Johnson / Joey Baron | Ballads
With Pieranunzi the lineage to the late pianist Bill Evans is clear, and given Johnson’s place in Evans' last trio before his death, it seems almost inevitable.
Johnson and Baron remain in perfect synchronicity, responding to Pieranunzi while retaining the understated elegance that defines the tune.
Johnson and Baron seem forever poised on the verge of a slow swing during Pieranunzi’s lyrical solo, but they create a lovely tension by never quite getting there.

Securing this job not only brought Johnson fulfilment of a dream he had nurtured since his days as a student, but also presented him on the world stage with a major jazz artist.
Apart from his own small bands, Johnson has also sought the company of leading guitarists for recording sessions, obviously finding this particular combination of stringed instruments, bass and guitar, very much to his taste.
Built upon a solid foundation of training and deep understanding of the music he plays, Johnson has been able to work comfortably outside the customary envelope of jazz, in particular embracing South American concepts, yet he retains a firm belief in the roots of contemporary jazz.

Bassist Marc Johnson has only released a handful of albums under his own name since emerging in the late 1970s.

Shades of Jade : Marc Johnson : CD Reviews : One Final Note
Bassist Marc Johnson is a heavyweight in the ECM roster—in the last five or so years he’s appeared on John Taylor, John Abercrombie, and Charles Lloyd sessions for the label.
Johnson is a reliable, steady presence at the bass, but his choice of material and tempo aren’t as solid.
This contemplative mood is what Johnson does best—“Don’t Ask of Me”, a plaintive Armenian song (though out of place in context of the rest of the album), also shows the bass player at home in his concept.

Amazon.ca: Sound Of Summer Running: Music: Marc Johnson   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
Bassist Marc Johnson has excelled at attracting smart, thoughtful bands for his periodic studio dates, none smarter or more instantly engaging than the de facto supergroup drafted for his Verve label debut.
The Sound of Summer Running is a fitting image for this deceptively breezy, nearly telepathic summit between Johnson, guitarists Bill Frisell and Pat Metheny, and drummer Joey Baron, a dream team that makes its collective technical prowess invisible.
Hearing Frisell and Metheny--arguably the two most original and identifiable guitar stylists in modern music--establish their relaxed, playful dialogue would be reason enough for this meeting, but Johnson's focal role as composer with an unforced lyricism along with Baron's consistently superb percussion make this a sound for all seasons.
