TrouserPress.com :: Marc Riley with the Creepers
Guitarist/keyboardist Riley was booted out of the Fall in 1982, reportedly over an unseemly penchant for pop.
Although Riley shares his former group's taste for deadpan vocals and distorted guitar and keyboard sounds, freed of Mark E. Smith's clutches he exhibits more melodic, structured songwriting and has one foot firmly rooted in the garage punk tradition.
As entertaining for Riley's between-song banter as it is for great songs (including Eno's pre-ambience "Baby's on Fire"), it can serve as a very good introduction to the uninitiated.

First released September 27 1982, it was recorded as a somewhat rushed follow-up to that March's Hex Enduction Hour, and was to be Marc Riley's last album with the group.
The group had originally entered the studio to record a single but Mark E. Smith prevailed upon the group to record more songs, all of which were new to the band and had not previously been rehearsed or performed live.
The album was completed prior to the group's tour of Australia and New Zealand in July and August of 1982 and thus songs from the record feature heavily on the live album Fall In a Hole.

Anyway, in this long-playing compilation of the vinyl-so-far, ex-Fall renegade Marc Riley and his motley crew of Creepers bash out mordant ditties that bounce with ride health and proudly proclaim the quintessential cool to be found only in stubborn unhipness.
One of the more inspiring rumours about why Marc Riley left The Fall was that he'd incurred Mark Smith's displeasure when said Smith was not invited to the nuptuals of said Riley.
His peculiar talent, one which he shares with the Three Johns and many of that ilk, is the creation of the leaping maelstrom, a noisy wildness confined with a simple sketch of popness; he is a master of the catchy near-tune.
