The soundtrack (and the movie) is really a musical, and the first 13 tracks are songs sung by the South Park characters to tell their story, underlined by vivacious theatrical music by veteran film composer Marc Shaiman.
Shaiman's songs have strong contextual content, such as the dramatic triumphs in "La Resistance," choral emphasis such as "Blame Canada," or the locale introduction in the opening song "Mountain Town." You can definitely hear his orchestra in the background.
Marc Shaiman co-wrote an additional three of these songs too, the relatively inoffensive ones, if that matters to you.

Anyway, whatever happened, Marc Shaiman obviously knew that this should be a whimsical score for a very whimsical film.
I guess it's the fact that Shaiman knows he has, a good theme that works for more introspective moments, but also sounds great as bouncing incidental travelling music as North ventures from one part of the globe to the other.
Those who like Shaiman's music will probably love his selections since they are tuneful and warm hearted - as usual - but might be disappointed as I was with the other material.

Shaiman is proving himself quite a master in simple, romantic, and thematically touching film scores.
Shaiman's main theme is heroic and genuine, and has the same contemporary appeal as the end titles of The American President (and I wouldn't be surprised if Patch Adams joins The American President as a popular piece for trailers).
The result is only a little over 20 minutes of Shaiman's music on the CD, which is a far cry from the American President album.
