When Marcel Camus entered the world, these stories made the front page of the nation's newspapers: The U.S. House of Representatives rules that campaign expenses for presidential elections are to be announced to the public.
When Marcel Camus was rocking in a cradle, these songs were topping the music charts: Back in 1912, the popular songs were: At the Devil's Ball performed by Irving Berlin; Bagdad performed by Anne Caldwell; Do It Again sung by Irving Berlin; as well as Everybody Two-Step by Earl C. Jones.
While Marcel Camus was discovering how to stand up, The Academy gave a standing ovation to these movies and actors: Art- Marc Chagall - 'The Cattle Dealer.' won the Best Movie Academy Award in 1912.

Camus, however, puts his particular version of the myth in the context of Rio de Janeiro’s “Carnaval”: a brilliantly colorful celebration that incorporates lively dancing with ornate costumes and parade floats, all choreographed and underscored by the fast beat of Samba.
Orpheus’ supernatural musical ability, the love story between the two, the journey into the underworld, the singing of the song to call forth Eurydice, the mistake of Orpheus sending Eurydice away from him and the paradoxical tragic/happy ending that kills Orpheus but reunites him with Eurydice so that they are both together.
Moreover, it seems as though Camus tries to show that there is no reason for sadness in the end by his interjection of the children playing Orpheus’ guitar and dancing around the cliffs as if they offer no threat.

Marcel Camus's 1959 update of the Greek myth features an all-fl cast and a story set in the frenetic energy of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.
Camus at once demystifies and remystifies the old story, shifting not only its location but its tone and context, forcing a reevaluation of the legend as a more passionate, pulsing, sensual experience.
Quite simply, Marcel Camus' sublime "Black Orpheus" is the best representation of the Greek myth of Eurydice and Orpheus ever attempted by an artist.

IO DE JANEIRO -- In 1956, Vinicius de Moraes's play "Orfeu da Conceição" opened here, and the enthusiastic audiences that filled every theater in the country in which the play was staged reflected perfectly the significance and implications of the event.
Three years later, "Black Orpheus," the film by the French director Marcel Camus that was based on the play, enthralled non-Brazilians and went on to win the Palme d'Or at Cannes and the Oscar for best foreign film.
The fact that Brazilians thoroughly reject the Camus film has been hard for foreigners to accept.

Existentialism -- Philosophy Books and Online Resources
For the most part this assessment is true of the early and, by now, "classical" works of existentialism, those that first burst upon the philosophical and cultural scene.
Circulating Being centers on the later works of several well-known French existentialists (Camus, Marcel, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty) to trace out the development of their existential thinking about language, communicative life, ethics, and politics.
This development "from embodiment to incorporation" carries existentialism beyond identification with the mere reactionary and reveals how, while prefiguring postmodernism in important ways, the existential thinkers dealt with here reveal themselves to be reconstructive of the Western tradition.

Both Cocteau and Marcel Camus update the same story into modern surroundings yet tread entirely different routes in the telling - Cocteau’s adaptation was more of a sly intellectual/poetic metaphor that played on contemporary images, whereas Camus’s version is an earthy ebullient Latin American celebration of life.

Unfortunately he did not even come close to the earlier success; the visuals are every bit as brilliant, but the story is not integrated well into the backgrounds.
