By age 25, Carné had already directed his first film, one that marked the beginning of a successful collaboration with surrealist poet and screenwriter Jacques Prévert that lasted for more than a dozen years during which they created films that defined French cinema of the day.
Marcel Carné died in 1996 in Clamart, Hauts-de-Seine, and was interred in the Cimetière Saint-Vincent in Montmartre.

In the 19th century Paris theater world, life and performance become interchangeable, as the complex romantic entanglements of Arletty's inscrutable Garance with superficial actor Frederick, a wealthy count, and especially Jean-Louis Barrault's sensitive mime Baptiste become fodder for the masses crowding the "Street of Crimes" and the theater's uppermost balcony.
Magnificently recreating the period and its tradition of popular entertainment, Les Enfants du Paradis was released to international postwar acclaim for its spectacular beauty and excellent acting, while Prvert's intelligent script was nominated for a screenplay Oscar.
Even as Carn fell out of artistic favor after the 1940s, Les Enfants du Paradis's glorious visuals transcended its association with the maligned French "Tradition of Quality," maintaining its legacy as Carn and Prvert's crowning achievement.

If it is true that the appropriation is a self-reflective gesture and a historical method, I would deny that for the remake in general.
There are examples in history where the opposite has been practised: Having remade Marcel Carné's Le jour se lève (1939), the RKO Radio Pictures Incorporated bought all copies they could get of the French film and destroyed them in order to bring out unperturbedly Anatole Litvak's The Long Night (1947).
It is the merit of Gus Van Sant to have done - to my knowledge - the only example of a remake that comes out of the logic of the appropriation gesture.
