  Casablanca
Dalio's first movie in the United States was the 1941 Fred MacMurray comedy One Night in Lisbon where he portrayed a hotel concierge.
Dalio also appeared in numerous television shows both in the United States (between 1954 and 1963) and in France (1968 to 1981).
Dalio, who appeared in almost 150 movies, died in Paris on November 20, 1983 at the age of 83.

Marcel Dalio - Films as Actor:
During a long Hollywood career impersonating waiters, Marcel Dalio, previously one of the most refined character performers of the prewar French cinema (a distinction confirmed by the simple use of his surname alone in the credits), conveyed with unfailing good taste the hauteur of a man who served others from a position of power.
Despite this success in a leading role, Dalio was destined to remain mainly a character actor.
Dorothy Parker is said to have connived at his salvation by pointing him out at a party as "the great French actor Dalio." Unfortunately, the parts that came his way were those of waiters and domestics, leavened with the occasional curé or military officer, the sort of roles handed out to most accented émigrés.

Combustible Celluloid film review - The Rules of the Game (1939), Jean Renoir, Marcel Dalio, Nora Gregor, dvd review
The Marquis Robert de la Chesnaye (Marcel Dalio, later in Casablanca) and his beloved wife from Vienna, Christine (Nora Gregor), host the party.
Renoir's camera glides over the machine's many moving parts, then over Dalio's face, which registers a moving mixture of pride, anxiety and sadness.
Still, this is undoubtedly the best version of the film ever seen, besides the original 1939 premiere.

dOc DVD Review: Grand Illusion (1938)
There we meet the other major character of the movie, Lieutenant Morgenthal (Marcel Dalio) from a wealthy French Jewish family, who becomes a close friend of Maréchal.
The camp is populated by other well-developed characters, part of Renoir's tapestry of class and race, that come to know and respect each other in the extraordinary situation that war has provided.
The sound retains a tinny quality that old films have, but there has been care taken to make the sound consistent and there is very little extraneous noise to be heard in the quiet moments.

Grand Illusion Movie: Grand Illusion DVD is available from Bestprices.com
Calling on his own experiences as an aviator in WWI as well as those of his comrades, Jean Renoir's antiwar masterpiece bids farewell to the class constrictions of European society and calls for the unity of humankind across class and national boundaries.
Like the charming aristocrat de Boldieu (Pierre Fresnay), these two French aviators were shot down and now spend most of their time escaping from German prison camps before inevitably being recaptured.
Jean Renoir's brilliant farewell to Europe's ancient regime, GRAND ILLUSION, set during WWI, stars Jean Gabin as Marechal and Marcel Dalio as Rosenthal, French prisoners of war who constantly escape from prison only to be recaptured.

Madeleine, a budding actress in her own right, was ironically cast in 'Hold Back the Dawn', a vehicle for Charles Boyer with a plot driven by the efforts of an émigré (Boyer) trying desperately to cross into the United States from Mexico.
Faced with a hopelessly idealistic young American pilot, Dalio, as simply 'old man in whore house', in tight close-up, delivers a discourse on practical people faced with impractical circumstances, of the virtues of expedience in the face of amorality.
Using his wonderful plastic features, now beginning to sag, in a voice full of melancholy, the old man reassures the young man that regardless of what 'grand themes' may be afoot in the world, in the end, little matters but survival.

To avert a scandal, the cultured Robert de la Chesnaye (Marcel Dalio), husband to the aviator's mistress, Christine (Nora Gregor), and a philanderer in his own right, invites all to a weekend hunting party in his country mansion.
There is also a rather poignant moment of Renoir reuniting with actor Marcel Dalio at the steps of the "La Colinire," where they reminisce about their experience.
The acting is first-rate with stand-out work from Roland Toutain as André, Marcel Dalio as Robert, a comical Julien Carette as Marceau and Renoir himself as Octave.

A series of posters were produced and were then displayed throughout the city with the caption 'a typical Jew' so that citizens could more easily report anyone suspected of unrepentant Jewishness....
Principal players were cast and a director hired but casting calls for supporting roles and bit players continued and sometime in the early spring Marcel Dalio and Madeleine LeBeau were cast as, respectively, a croupier and a romantic entanglement for the male lead.

Les Aventures de Rabbi Jacob / The Adventures of Rabbi Jacob / Gérard Oury / 1973 / film review
Cast: Louis de Funès (Victor Pivert), Suzy Delair (Germaine Pivert), Marcel Dalio (Rabbi Jacob), Claude Giraud (Mohamed Larbi Slimane), Renzo Montagnani (Farès), Janet Brandt, André Falcon (Le ministre), Xavier Gélin (Le fils du général), Henri Guybet (Salomon), Popeck (Moishe), Miou-Miou (Antoinette Pivert), Denise Provence (Esther), Jacques François (Le général), Claude Piéplu (Commissaire Andreani)
Some spectators may take offence at the film’s superficial portrayal of Jewish life, but to do so would be missing the point of the film.
As in Oury’s previous great comic film, La Grande vadrouille, every character in the film is a shameless caricature, and if anything it is the Jewish characters who are treated most sympathetically and believably (for example, witness Marcel Dalio’s credible portrayal of Rabbi Jacob).
