  Definition of Marcel Grossman
Marcel Grossman (born in Budapest on April 9th, 1878 - died in Zurich on September 7th, 1936) was a mathematician and a friend and classmate of Albert Einstein.
It was Grossman who emphasized the importance of the Riemannian geometry to Einstein, which was a necessary step in the development of Einstein's general theory of relativity.
The community of relativists celebrates Grossman's contributions to physics by organizing Marcel Grossman meetings every year.

  SparkNotes: Albert Einstein: Student Days
One such friend was Marcel Grossman, a mathematics student one year his senior.
Grossman's father was a factory owner in Zurich and Marcel was the product of a liberal Swiss environment.
Grossman continued to come to Einstein's aid in later years, first by helping him to secure a position at a patent office in Bern following his graduation, and then by working on the mathematical calculations of the general relativity theory.

Albert Einstein: Great Scientist, Curious Man
In fact, he needed the assistance of a friend, mathematician Marcel Grossman, to wield the tools necessary to develop his general theory of relativity.
By utter coincidence, this friend was Marcel Grossman, the man who would help shape the mathematical aspects of Einstein's general relativity theory.
Einstein then used tensor calculus (with the help of his friend Grossman) to determine sixteen field equations: ten which are gravitational and six of an electromagnetic nature.

 Einstein Albert
A photograph taken at this time shows Marcel Grossman, Einstein, Gustav Geissler, and Eugen Grossman.
He worked at the patent office in Bern from 1902 to 1909 and while there he completed an astonishing range of theoretical physics publications, written in his spare time without the benefit of close contact with scientific literature or colleagues.
By 1911 Einstein was able to make preliminary predictions about how a ray of light from a distant star, passing near the Sun, would appear to be bent slightly, in the direction of the Sun.

Only there could he "seek out the paths that led to the depths." He also realized that he could never be an outstanding student.
Fortunately his friend Marcel Grossmann had the conventional traits Einstein lacked.
While Einstein worked in the library or the laboratory, Grossmann took excellent notes at the mathematics lectures, and gladly shared them with his friend before examinations.

 Chapter 8
Beginning in 1908 Einstein took a three year break from his work on the special theory of relativity to teach.
In 1912 Einstein went to work on incorporating gravity into his theory with the help of his friend Marcel Grossman.
With Grossman’s knowledge of geometry and Einstein’s further applications of calculus, a description and use of four-dimensional spacetime was created thus leading to the completed theory of general relativity.

Farness and Nearness in Brane Theories
When Einstein was advised by Marcel Grossman to formulate his General Relativity in terms of Ricci's (and Levi Civita's) Absolute Differential Calculus, now known as tensor analysis, the geometer Grossman chosen distance functions (metrics) and therefore farness, not nearness or proximity functions.
Ordinarily one might conclude that Grossman and Einstein were wrong, but since I am arguing that we are free to use any axioms that we want regarding farness and nearness, I obviously have something else in mind.
I do not think that anybody is wrong.

If not, don't be too discouraged: Albert Einstein himself didn't yet know the necessary mathematics for dealing with curved spacetime (or even curved spaces!) when he was first trying to formulate general relativity.
He got some help from a mathematician friend (that is not an oxymoron!), Marcel Grossman, who taught him Riemannian geometry (the stuff you've been learning).
This set of exercises is meant to give you a bit of practice with everything, so that we can do some general relativity calculations with the new tools soon.

While Einstein did do much of his work in his head and on paper, he had many friends and was an active part of the larger scientific community, participating in conferences with scientists from around the world who were working on related problems.
During his university years, Einstein often borrowed lecture notes from his friend Marcel Grossman, who introduced him to the non-Euclidean geometry that would be crucial to the general theory of relativity.
Einstein also spent a great deal of time talking with his closest friend, Michele Besso, about science, philosophy, and the nature of time.

That year also marked a significant change in the path of his long life in science.
Collaborating with mathematician Marcel Grossman, Einstein was scrambling to learn all he could about a new kind of geometry, heretofore almost entirely unknown to physicists, that might aid him in characterizing the bending of spacetime.
The stakes, he realized, were vast: Could special relativity be generalized into a theory of gravity?
