Topic: Marcel Otte

Marcel Otte - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Marcel Otte (born October 5, 1948) is a professor of Prehistory at the Université de Liège, Belgium.
Otte is one of the leading advocates of the Paleolithic Continuity Theory which states that Indo-European languages originated in Europe and have existed there since the Paleolithic period.
He also claims that the Indo-European migration from the steppes into the heart of Europe dates from the same period.

Marcel Otte: You should stress, I think, the last hunter-gatherers and then the Pre-Pottery Neolithic A and B, if it has still a meaning in Central Anatolia.
And I perfectly agree with Marcel Otte and also with what Didier has been saying, that our evidence is still not enough to separate it into regional differences I think.
So, coming back to what Marcel has been saying, I think when we try to make such charts, we should also always include the cultural identity, or cultural characters so as to understand what these dates or what these horizons really mean.

Dealing with symbolism implies first of all that all discussants operate on a similar level of argumentation, and further that the hypothetical character of the propositions be kept in mind throughout the debate.
Marcel Otte drew attention to the terms of the dialectic ‘spiritualism – materialism’, focusing on the question of anteriority between mind and economic way of life in psycho-cultural evolution.
But questions belonging to those two orders are, in my view, wrongly posed in such a debate because they are outside an efficient framework given by the problematic ‘human – environment’ attested in the palaeoclimatological background.

Abnormal Interests: 400,000 Year Old Tools from Iran?
"The primary studies on the tools did not reveal their exact age, so the tools were sent to Professor Marcel Otte of the University of Liege in Belgium.
First, it appears that Otte determined the age of the tools by tool morphology rather than archaeological context.
I can not help but wonder if Otte simply thought they were older than 300,000 years ago and that 400,000 years ago would not be out of line as a educated guess.

Science Fair Projects - Paleolithic Continuity Theory
It is based on a controversial synthesis of linguistic studies, the archaeogenetical studies of Brian Sykes indicating that some 80% of the genetic stock of Europeans goes back to the Paleolithic, as well as on archaeological data indicating European cultural continuity.
Its main proponents are the Italian linguists Mario Alinei, Gabriele Costa and Cicero Poghirc as well as the German and Belgian prehistorians Alexander Hausler and Marcel Otte.
In historical linguistics it is commonly deemed unfeasible to make any assertion about particular languages of such antiquity.

These are revealed, for example, in the typology of Mousterian tools, where the tool types are not clearly defined and where one type seems to grade almost imperceptibly into another (Dibble 1988).
