Gandini had his first model ready in may 1986 and Marmiroli loved it, there was one problem, again Lamborghini was in financial problems, and in april 1987 the company was taken over by the Chrysler concern.
(Gandini used the first design later for the Cizeta-Moroder, a V 16 car.) The americans weren't quite satisfied and, in cooperation with Gandini took the model to their wind tunnel and design-computers, it came out as we know it today.

The Fiat X1/9 was a small mid-engined two-seater sports car manufactured during the 1970s and 1980s.
The X1/9 started life in 1972 as a show concept car, with styling by Bertone under chief designer Marcello Gandini.
It was designed around the mechanicals and engine from the front wheel drive Fiat 128, but used these parts in a radical way, moving the entire transverse drive train and suspension assembly from the front of the 128 to the rear of the X1/9, giving a mid-engined layout.

Penned by Marcello Gandini who had famously been responsible for Lamborghini's Miura, Countach and Diablo, the shell was fabricated from a combination of carbon-fibre and aluminium panels bonded to the chassis for ultimate rigidity.
Gandini’s design failed to captivate in the same way as those aforementioned Lamborghini's, the EB110's awkward headlights lending the car a slightly bizarre appearance.
Other interesting details were the trademark Gandini scissor doors used so effectively on the Countach and Diablo, a glass engine cover providing a wonderful view of the V12 engine and a huge speed-sensitive electronic rear wing that could be raised at the flick of a switch.

Having already designed the sultry Miura and sensational Countach, Marcello Gandini was selected to create bodywork for P132.
This mattered little in the end though as the predominantly alloy-bodied machine with its carbon composite engine cover, front lid and bumpers, was an infinitely smoother design than the final Countach with no wheelarch extensions, bulky airboxes or tacked on spoilers.
Although the cabin was originally to have been penned by Gandini, it was eventually created by the Chrysler Design Center in Detroit.

It was first introduced to the public in the spring of 1970 at the Geneva Motor Show.
Styling by Bertone's Marcello Gandini resulted in a roomy, glassy coupe deliberately unspectacular, maybe even somewhat mediocre in design but one that surely must have had some influence on the later Toyota Celica/Supra line and MVS Venturi.
Although the body was designed and pressed by Bertone at its Grugliasco factory, final assembly continued in the hands of Marazzi.
