Stearns was a member of both the 1868 constitutional convention and the Florida House of Representatives from 1868 through 1872, serving as speaker of the 1869 session.
While Stearns was governor, Florida's budget was balanced, and tourists first began to flock to the state.

Marcellus Lovejoy Stearns (1839-1891) was an American politician.
He served as the 11th governor of Florida, from 1874 to 1877.
Stearns attempted to force Jonathan Clarkson Gibbs to resign his post as Superintendent of Public Instruction, but was unsuccessful due to Gibbs' immense popularity.

 About Lake Placid Florida - Greater Lake Placid Florida Chamber of Commerce
Over the ensuing years the settlement was known as Lake Buck, Lake June and Lake Stearns (after Marcellus Stearns, U.S. Government Surveyor General at the time).
However, with the advent of the Atlantic Coastline railroad through the area, the name was changed again to Wicco because it was the railroad’s official name for the stop.
By 1924 the area was once again called Lake Stearns (as was the lake west of town) and A.H. DeVane, E.C. Stuart and E. Morrow promoted citrus and land development here.

Hamblen took advantage of the opportunity, and he and his family moved to Quincy, Florida.
Hamblen’s surveying skill would come to the attention of Florida governor Marcellus Lovejoy Stearns, and when Stearns was later appointed to the Hot Springs Commission (which was over the national reservation), he offered Hamblen a surveying job in the summer of 1877.
When the surveying was completed in 1879, he and his family stayed in Hot Springs, where he did private surveying and practiced law.

When John F. Bartholf, the Republican clerk of court of Manatee County, submitted his resignation in late August 1876, James D. Green proposed to Republican Governor Marcellus L. Stearns, who was also the party's nominee for governor, that Andrew be appointed clerk.
After Andrew refused to give the voter registration lists to Graham, he and other Manatee Democrats, complying as nearly as possible, proceeded anyway with the November 7 election, in which the Democrats swept the county with 289 votes for George F. Drew for governor and 288 votes for Samuel J. Tilden for president.
