On March 16, the District’s Mayor requested that DCWASA utilize mail (or equivalent) methods to distribute the remaining devices to homes believed to be served by lead service lines, and DCWASA is committed to timely implementation of this new program.
During 2004 DCWASA intends to supplement the brochure "Living Lead Free in DC" with a new publication that explains the current lead level situation in DC.
The objective is to sample and test for lead in the drinking water at sixteen apartment buildings focusing on outlets that serve the high-risk population (pregnant/nursing women and children under the age of six).

From March 6 to 10, close to 100 ACORN leaders from around the country participated in ACORN’s 12th Annual Legislative and Political Conference in Washington DC, taking part in workshops, rallies, lobby visits, and meetings with allies and elected officials.
On March 9, ACORN released the study “Separate and Unequal 2004: Predatory Lending in America” which documents the targeting of subprime home loans to minority and low-income families.
In response, ACORN members won a March 5 meeting with City Administrator Robert Bobb and representatives from the Mayor’s office where Bobb committed $1 million in funds to the DC Energy Office, the agency that manages LIHEAP dollars in the District, to help thousands of low-income DC residents pay their utilities bills.

In the absence of Director Frank Muller, Dick Biddle discussed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that MDE had requested to be signed and submitted by January 31, 2004 even though we did not receive the MOU paper work until the end of February.
Funds are to be allocated by March 1, 2004 and any unused funds should be returned to MDE by February 1, 2005.
The date of the next LEPC meeting will be Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at 11:00 AM in the Cecil County Department of Emergency Services Training Center.

Through the generosity of the Taiwan Ministry of Education and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston (TECO), the Department of Asian Studies at Williams College has been awarded a scholarship for one Williams student to study Mandarin language in Taiwan during 2004-2005.
As explained in a letter received from TECO, “this scholarship is being awarded to your esteemed college in the hopes of fostering a strong friendship between Williams College and Taiwan and furthering our mutual academic goals of cross-cultural understanding and exchange.”
The scholarship allows one Williams student to study Mandarin language in Taiwan at a language training center of the student’s choice from September 2004 through August 2005.
