General Sherman's March to the Sea
When he resolved to march through the heart of Georgia from Atlanta to the sea, he delegated to General Thomas full power over all the troops under his (Sherman's) command excepting four corps.
It began its march for the sea on the morning of the 14th, when the entire city of Atlanta—excepting its courthouse, churches, and dwellings—was committed to the flames.
Yet on that march there were many deeds that tested the prowess and daring of the soldiers on both sides.

Sherman's march to the Sea - AJC
Editor's Note: While Sherman's historic March to the Sea was not an act of God, like flood or storm, it was easily the worst disaster ever suffered by Georgia.
Unlike whirling hurricanes or the erratic thunder of tornadoes, the march was carefully planned to cripple Georgia, a calculated roundhouse blow to the rich breadbasket of the Confederacy.
Marching thru 40 of the state's richest counties, the Union soldiers smashed Georgia's industrial strength and demolished her east-west railroad network.

Sherman's March to the Sea Summary
Sherman's March to the Sea is the name commonly given to the Savannah Campaign, conducted in late 1864 by Major General William Tecumseh Sherman of the Union Army during the American Civil War.
The March to the Sea is considered by many historians to have demonstrated Sherman's superb command of military strategy, and his commitment to destroying the Confederacy's ability to wage further war may well have hastened the end of the conflict.
His tactics during his march to the sea and his other battles were inhumane because he had no sympathy for the people of Atlanta.

He practiced psychological warfare; he believed that by marching an army across the state he would demonstrate to the world that the Union had a power the Confederacy could not resist.
After the march Davis was soundly criticized by the Northern press, but Sherman backed his commander by pointing out that Davis had done what was militarily necessary.

Residents have since reported more fish kills in creeks leading out from the mine into the sea, but so far, aside from dismissing the incidents as results of "sabotage," there has been no active and convincing response on the part of the company and the government to verify and explain these reports.

Now that the "Gate City of the South" was secured, it was time to either eliminate the threat still posed by the Confederacy's major western army, the Army of Tennessee (38,000 men - GEN John Bell Hood, commanding) or continue to ravage Georgia's war resources during a risky march to the sea.
Deeming it strategically futile to continue to pursue the elusive Hood, now operating north and west of Atlanta, Sherman sent the Army of the Cumberland (commanded by MG George H. Thomas - the "Rock of Chickamauga") to the Federal base at Nashville, TN.
