The March to the Sea, the Civil War's most destructive campaign against a civilian population, began in Atlanta on November 15, 1864, and concluded in Savannah on December 21, 1864.
After the march Davis was soundly criticized by the Northern press, but Sherman backed his commander by pointing out that Davis had done what was militarily necessary.
By marching through Georgia and South Carolina he became an archvillain in the South and a hero in the North.

The action concentrates on a small detachment of Draka paratroopers who capture "Village One", a hamlet high on a pass through the Caucasus between Draka-held Armenia and German-held Georgia, choke point for a strategic highway through the mountain range.
This is not the work of solitary madmen, but a whole society with iron determination, utterly ruthless, frighteningly rational, and bound to succeed.
Much of the novel is seen through the eyes of the Draka, making for a a very fascinating and frightening read.

The heroes are former Confederates, who cut short the singing of "Marching" with their own singing of "Dixie." A fight ensues, and the nasty "blue bellies" are put in their place.
