Halfway through Wynton's 13-part composition, Jazz in Marciac Producer Jean-Louis Guillhaumon rushed onto the stage and announced that a powerful gale was headed directly for the town.
Guy Lafitte, the honorary president of Jazz in Marciac, stood beaming at the side of the stage during that performance.

The project is a special one for the trumpeter-bandleader-composer who is heralded in Marciac as its adopted son (recently the authorities of the Gascony region, land of the legendary Three Musketeers, even bestowed upon Marsalis the prestigious honorary title of Musketeer).
On The Marciac Suite, Marsalis also sings the praises of the region's brandy on "Armagnac Dreams" and whimsically takes note of the province's culinary love of duck on "Loose Duck," a tale of one feathered friend that escaped the ax long enough to stroll through the Marciac town plaza.
Perhaps, given Marsalis' radiant work of art, The Marciac Suite, and the great respect the townspeople and festival-goers have for him, Lafitte's baton will be passed on to the trumpeter.

Marciac is a bastide town founded in the 13th century on one of the main routes of the pilgri;age to St Jacques de Compostelle.
Its church boasts the highest clock tower in the Gers, and indeed the two spires - the second is on an old church now housing the tourist office - can be seen from a long way off.
But besides being a good example of a bastide, Marciac is a very lively town that has gained an international reputation for its August jazz festival, and indeed for its programme of musical activities throughout the year.

A sense of dual culture shock was the dominant first impression for this newcomer at the 28th Annual Jazz In Marciac Festival, a two-week event featuring a large roster of top-name acts descending on a remote village of only 1,200 people.
The main acts possess the glitz and crowds of the world's biggest festivals, numerous less-known acts throughout the village offer the intimacy and regional exposure of small events, and contrasts of everyday life seem to magnify during a festival with a total attendance of about 180,000.

 Wynton Marsalis Marciac Suite
The Marciac Suite is named after Marciac, the small French village with 1300 inhabitants which hosts, since the late 1970s, an annual jazz festival.
Born thanks to the initiative of the local major and principal of Marciac's collège, Louis Guillhaumon, it started with trumpeter Bill Coleman and tenor saxophonist Guy Laffite, both of whom lived in the region.
It ranges from ballads such as Mademoiselle D'Gascony to the carnivalesque and circus-like Marciac Fun, which compose, together with Jean-Louis Is Everywhere and the final Sunflowers, with its underlying basic, simple rhythm, the highlights of the suite.
