I recently had the opportunity to speak with Marciano Cantero, lead vocalist for Latin Rock band Los Enanitos Verdes, who was in Argentina preparing for the band’s latest US tour.
Cantero had a lot to say about the group’s latest album Amores Lejanos, Argentina’s economic collapse, and his personal feelings on Shakira.
Cantero, guitarist Felipe Staiti, and drummer Daniel Piccolo have been together for 24 years (minus a brief two-year break-up in the early 90s).

Tras la disolución de Los Enanitos Verdes en 1990, Marciano Cantero, su principal compositor y cantante, inició su carrera solista con el disco "Luna Nueva", editado en un sello independiente y sin demasiada difusión.

The story of Los Enanitos Verdes goes back to the 70’s when singer/bassist Marciano Cantero, Daniel Piccolo (drums) and Felipe Staiti (guitar) decided to form a group that soon became one of the most successful Argentinean rock bands.
In 1983 the group decided to participate in a contest called La Falda Festival and soon after that they became well known in the cities of Mendoza and la Zona Cuyo.
While in Buenos Aires Cantero, Daniel and Felipe recorded their first album, but the project was never released.

That same spirit made the members of the band that was born at the foot of the Andes in Mendoza, Argentina decide to tour the continent, using a compass that never lost its north.
They went so far north that Marciano Cantero, the band's famous bassist, lead singer and songwriter now answers his phone in Mexico.
Logically, this has brought the band's name to the forefront of a notoriously massive audience, something quite noteworthy when taking into account that this is happening after millions of miles traveled across the continent, right when the group is celebrating its 25-year anniversary.

Enanitos Verdes: Marciano Cantero (vocals, bass); Felipe Staiti (guitar, background vocals); Horacio Gomez (piano, Wurlitzer piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond B-3 organ, Clavinet, background vocals); Daniel Piccolo (drums, percussion, background vocals).
"Cordillera" juicily blends the Incan sounds of pan flutes and the mandolin-like charango with Van Halen shredding and a groovy, edgy beat as vocalist/bassist Marciano Cantero sings of mountains and freedom.
Bittersweet piano and Hammond organ set the stage for "Un Futuro Mejor," a bluesy call for amorous renewal with rich backing harmonies that nod in the direction of the Beatles and perhaps Queen.
