Duchy of the Archipelago - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Duchy of the Archipelago was created in 1207 by Marco Sanudo, a participant in the Crusade and a nephew of the former Venetian doge Enrico Dandolo, who had led the Venetian fleet to Constantinople.
Sanudo was accompanied by Marino Dandolo and Andrea and Geremia Ghisi, as well as Ravano dalle Carceri, lord of Euboea, and Philocalo Navigaioso, lord of Lemnos.
Sanudo rebuilt a strong fortress and divided the island into 56 provinces, which he shared out as fiefs among the leaders of his men, most of whom were highly autonomous and apparently paid their own expenses.

 Marco Polo
Marco Polo (1254 - January 8 1324) was a Venetian merchant and explorer who, together with his father and uncle, was among the first Westerners to travel the Silk Road to China (which he called Cathay).
Marco refused, insisting, "I have only told half of what I saw!" While most historians believe that Marco Polo did indeed reach China, in recent times some have proposed that he did not get that far, and only retold information he had heard from others.
Marco Polo is also believed to have described a bridge that was the site of the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, a battle that marked the beginning of the Japanese invasion of north central China in World War II.

In the aftermath of the Fourth Crusade, with a Latin Emperor under the influence of the Venetians established at Constantinople, the Venetian Marco Sanudo, who was a cousin of doge Enrico Dandolo, arranged for the loan of eight galleys from the Venetian Arsenal.

With Naxos in hand in 1210, Sanudo and his brigand adventurers soon conquered Melos and the rest of the islands of the Cyclades, and he established himself as Duke of Naxia, or Duke of the Aegean, with his headquarters at Naxos.

Elsewhere in the same letter reference is made to the entrance of the cardinal to the sound of tanti trombeti, pifari e tamburlini and later of the washing of hands at the beginning of the meal accompanied by trombeti, pifari et tamburini.
In this latter passage it is not clear whether Sanudo is distinguishing between the trombe squarzade that entered the church and other types of trombe, as he did in earlier diary entries.
In these instances, where the reference is to the instruments of the doge, Sanudo clearly means the doge's six long silver trumpets and the ensemble of shawms and one or more trombones, as depicted in the Gentile Bellini painting (Figure 12), the Pagan woodcut (Figure 14 and Figure15), and the Franco engraving (Figure 23).

Naxos: The Kástro of Ano Hóra
He made Naxos the administrative center of his Duchy of the Aegean and it was that state’s nerve center until its fall to the Ottomans in 1566 A.D. With the help of trained engineers, Sanudo built a magnificent specimen of medieval architecture, one of the best preserved medieval walled cities in Greece.
The Kástro is a “must” visit for all architecture buffs because it is an excellent example of western ingenuity coupled with local craftsmanship and use of materials (Naxians were among the first Aegean cultures to use marble in building and art).
In building his Kástro, Sanudo was interested first and foremost in making evident the twin sources of his duchy’s power: the Roman Catholic Church and his secular authority to both control and distribute wealth.

The fortifications of Nasso are not a castle with towers and merlons, but a group of fortified mansions arranged in a way that they controlled the access to the top of the hill, where Marco Sanudo built his own fortified residence (which had a tall tower, now almost totally ruined).
The only remaining fortified mansion belonged to the Crispo family who took over from the Sanudo the title of Dukes of Nasso (or Dukes of the Archipelago as they ruled over a number of islands, including Milo).
In general during the Turkish domination all the Cycladic islands had a rather autonomous rule and enjoyed a degree of religious freedom.
