Journal of Seventeenth-Century Music | Vol. 6 No. 1 | Strainchamps: Marco da Gagliano in 1608
Gagliano even encouraged Ferdinando's compositional efforts to the point of accepting three of the prince/cardinal's arias for inclusion in La Dafne, though it could be speculated that had he not done so, there would have been less enthusiasm on the part of the Gonzagas for producing the opera.
Gagliano's family was made up of his widowed mother, four sisters, and two brothers, one older and one younger; the younger, Giovanni Battista da Gagliano, to whom Marco was teacher and mentor, would in time have a successful career himself in Florentine music.
Gagliano was put in the peculiar position of being at once the central figure in the affair—though one with little standing—but not a central actor.

Marco da Gagliano - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Marco da Gagliano (May 1, 1582 – February 25, 1643) was an Italian composer of the early Baroque era.
While the monody was a Baroque stylistic innovation, most of the madrigals are a cappella, and written in a style reminiscent of the late Renaissance (in the first decades of the 17th century, the continuo madrigal was becoming predominant, for example in the works of Monteverdi).
This mix of progressive and conservative trends can be seen throughout his music: some of his sacred music is a cappella, again in the prima prattica style of the previous century, while other pieces show influence of the Venetian School.

Gagliano's madrigals from his first book are predominantly syllabic and often homophonic, and they are filled with expressive and declamatory motives.
They may be seen as embodying many of the musical ideals of the Florentine camerate, especially that of the clear projection of text as an essential, even though they are manifested in a vocal ensemble.
Largely unknown as a madrigalist today, Gagliano's work in the genre was well received and admired throughout Europe during his lifetime and after; and especially was this so in Florence, where he flourished as the city's leading composer for more than forty years.

More specifically it arose when the relationship between music and drama, which had always been close, was reassessed in the light of certain preoccupations and ideals--the neo-classic inspiration provided by Greek drama, the rediscovery of the affective powers of declamatory song, the cultivation of the pastoral.
Cavalieri's publisher, Alessandro Guidotti, Rinuccini, Peri, and Gagliano all allude to the belief that Greek tragedy was 'sung in its entirety', and describe their own music-dramas as experiments to ascertain whether or not modern music could achieve similar effects.
Gagliano was generous in his tribute to Peri's skill in this style: 'Signor Jacopo Peri discovered that artful manner of declaiming in song which all Italy admires...

Io vidi in terra - Marco da Gagliano
"Io vidi la terra" is a text by a major Italian poet (Petrarch) set by the composer Marco da Gagliano (1582-1643), who also was the composer of one of the earliest operas, Dafne (1608).
It is an early example of the high baroque dance suite so well known from the works of J.S. Bach and many others, and calls for a typical early cello scordatura tuning, C-G-D-G. Two temperaments were used in the performance of these pieces.
