Marconi was born near Bologna, Italy, the second son of Giuseppe Marconi, an Italian landowner, and his Irish wife, Annie Jameson, granddaughter of the founder of the Jameson Whiskey distillery.
The various Marconi companies lost money for a number of years while they were being established—publicity about the value of radio in saving lives after the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912, plus the ensuing regulations requiring radio transmitters on seagoing vessels, helped to make the ventures profitable.
Marconi soon made the stunning announcement that on 12 December 1901, using a 122-metre (400-foot) kite-supported antenna for reception, he had personally received at Signal Hill in St John's, Newfoundland (now part of Canada) signals transmitted by the company's new high-power station at Poldhu, Cornwall.

Marconi Communications, the global telecommunications and network equipment company, plans to add 1,000 jobs at its headquarters in Marshall, the former home of Fore Systems.
Company officials, joined by Gov. Ridge, are scheduled to announce the expansion this morning, nearly a year to the day since Marconi PLC, the British parent of Marconi Communications, bought Fore for $4.5 billion.
Marconi has received about $5.6 million in state assistance to expand its local operations, including job-creation tax credits, loans for building construction and land acquisition, and grants for job training.

The shack was purchased by Edwin Armstrong (the inventor of FM radio) and given to RCA (circa 1930) as a symbol of RCA's continuation of the pioneering American Marconi Company in the United States.
Interestingly enough the predecessor of the RCA Company was the American Marconi Co. The end of World War 1 found radio firmly established as a medium of communication.
