Smart Computing Encyclopedia Entry - Marconi Corporation plc   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Marconi had pulled off the first international wireless transmission across the English Channel by 1899, and it was soon discovered that ships could use wireless radios to communicate with one another from as far as 60 miles apart.
Marconi installed transatlantic stations anyway; he discovered in 1901 that as long as the transmission and reception towers were a few hundred feet in height the signal would make it across the Atlantic.
Marconi’s company was an invaluable help to England and its allies during World War I, and after the war, wireless technology took on a different kind of importance as it was used to start the radio broadcasting industry.
