Dinghy - tScholars.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The typical sailing rig for a dinghy is that of a gunter with a two-piece folding mast stepped through a thwart and rested on the keel.
It is raised by pulling a rope and a single-sailed gaff rig is preferred over a marconi with a triangular mainsail and jib because a gaff rig has a lower center of force and a simpler rig.
The bottom of the main sail is usually untended (no boom) in order to avoid hitting the passengers with a spar.

Furthermore, Howard-Williams, working from that data, concluded that the crab claw sail had an advantage of 25% reaching over a low tech marconi rig of the same size, but that the marconi sail had an advantage close-hauled and to a lesser extent downwind.
Hence, Lee Helm was quite correct to say that a high tech boat, able to take the high tensions needed to make optimal use of high tech sails, possibly could outsail a boat with a crab claw sail on almost every point - especially close-hauled.
