And such was Paulus Aemilius, advanced in years, being nearly threescore, yet vigorous in his own person, and rich in valiant sons and sons-in-law, besides a great number of influential relations and friends, all of whom joined in urging him to yield to the desires of the people, who called him to the consulship.
Aemilius, rejoicing, gave them, not so many as Polybius states, but, as Nasica himself tells us in a brief letter which he wrote to one of the kings with an account of the expedition, three thousand Italians that were not Romans, and his left wing consisting of five thousand.
Aemilius was no novice in these things, nor was ignorant of the nature of the seeming irregularities of eclipses- that in a certain revolution of time, the moon in her course enters the shadow of the earth and is there obscured, till, passing the region of darkness, she is again enlightened by the sun.

Second Triumvirate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The most notable victim, Marcus Tullius Cicero, who had opposed Caesar and excoriated Antony in his Philippics, came as no surprise, but the proscription of Caesar's legate Quintus Tullius Cicero (the more famous Cicero's younger brother) seemed to be motivated by pure spite.
Consequently, Lepidus cooperated in Octavian's campaign against Pompeius (son of Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus) but foolishly attempted to seize control of Octavian's victorious legions; Octavian unilaterally expelled Lepidus from the Triumvirate, but allowed him to retain his Pontificate.
With the complete defeat of Antony and the marginalisation of Lepidus, Octavian was left sole master of the Roman world, and proceeded to establish the Principate as the first Roman "emperor".

The Basilica Aemilia was first constructed in 179 BCE during the censorship of Marcus Aemilius Lepidus.
It was, however, the descendents of M. Aemilius Lepidus who continued to develop and decorate the basilica throughout the Republic.
The praise for this renovation in Pliny, Plutarch and Appian suggests the reason that almost all later references to this building are to the "Basilica Paulli." This restoration was not completed until 34 BCE, during the consulship of Lucius Aemilius Lepidus Paullus.
