Marcus Cocceius Nerva - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Marcus Cocceius Nerva (November 8, 35 –January 27, 98), Roman emperor (96–98), was a member of the Italian nobility rather than one of the elite of Rome; in this he was like Vespasian, the founder of the Flavian dynasty.
Nerva had not pursued the usual administrative career, although he had been consul with Vespasian in 71 and with Domitian in 90.
Nerva was obtusely connected with the Augustans, as his uncle Octavius Laenas had married Rubellia Bassa the great-granddaughter of Tiberius.

 Nerva
Marcus Cocceius Nerva was born on 8 November at Narnia, 50 miles north of Rome.
Nerva had made the mistake of replacing the praetorian prefects Secundus and Norbanus, who it was thought could not be kept in their positions after their part in the assassination of Domitian.
Nerva was imprisoned in the palace and it was demanded that Petronius and Parthenius (as well as the previous prefect Secundus) be handed over to the praetorians for execution, due to their role in the murder of Domitian.

Nerva seems to have followed the custom of announcing the general lines of his future policy.
No one probably expected from Nerva a vigorous administration either at home or abroad, although during his reign a successful campaign was carried on in Pannonia against the Germans (Suebi), for which he assumed the name Germanicus.
Nerva seems nevertheless to have soon wearied of the uncongenial task of governing, and his anxiety tobe rid of it was quickened by the discovery that not even his blameless life and mild rule protected him against intrigue and disaffection.

 Roman Emperors - DIR Nerva
Although short, the reign of Marcus Cocceius Nerva (A.D. 96-98) is pivotal.
On the paternal side, his great-grandfather, M. Cocceius Nerva, was consul in 36 B.C.; his grandfather, a distinguished jurist of the same name, accompanied Tiberius on his retirement to Capri in 26 A.D. On his mother's side an aunt, Rubellia Bassa, was the great-granddaughter of Tiberius.
Nerva was born on 8 November, 30 A.D. Little is known of his upbringing beyond the fact that he belonged to a senatorial family and pursued neither a military nor a public speaking career.
