Marcus Miller (born June 14, 1959 in New York) is a jazz musician, composer and producer, perhaps best known as a bass guitarist with Miles Davis and David Sanborn.
Miller is classically trained as a clarinetist, and also plays bass clarinet, keyboards, saxophone, and guitar, and is a capable singer.
Audible in Miller's playing, along with the rich and undeniable originality, are the influences of some of the previous generation of electric bass players, such as Keni Burke and especially Jaco Pastorius (who himself was only born in 1951).

After playing bass in Davis' band, Miller got a chance to produce the legend, which was, not surprisingly, a bit intimidating for a young man. “Oh yeah, especially at the beginning,” he admits.
Miller says that building the studio was a way for him to control his sessions better, “particularly because we started a label that my record was the first release on,” he explains.
Miller's breadth of experience and talent, starting with his earliest sessions, has made him a first-call sideman, songwriter, composer and producer.

Miller’s atmospheric “La Villette” will either attract or repel in direct relation to the listener’s ability to enjoy what is basically a somewhat overwrought RandB song that is kicked into a new dimension by Miller’s attempts to sonically represent a collage of sounds heard while living in a Paris apartment.
Miller’s ability to turn the electric bass into a gorgeous melodic instrument is on full display, as is the very beautiful harmonica work of Gregoire Maret, who has also graced albums by Me’shell Ndegeocello and Cassandra Wilson.
Miller’s solo performance on Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Lady” is his most straight-ahead jazz performance on the recording, even though the does use synth strings and a rhythm loops to create a kind of smoky, romantic modern urban environment.

Miller's hands-on approach to producing has at times led to the accusation that the albums he produces are really Marcus Miller solo albums featuring the artist.
However, Miller is the first to admit that choices in the music industry are more and more made in favour of commercial success, and that this is bad for music, to the degree that the music industry as a whole is now in decline.

Marcus is the only bass player I've ever heard who can get that "hi-tech sound" with a Fender Jazz Bass.

He usually starts the tune, he gives very clear direction to his bandmates (like mimeing how he wanted Poogie to play his drumline at a few points during the show) and calls solos as the song progresses (pointing to which member of the band is to solo and when their solo is to end).
