 Roman Emperors - DIR Macrinus
Marcus Opellius Macrinus was the first emperor who was neither a senator nor of a senatorial family at the time of his accession.
Macrinus shared the position with the experienced soldier Adventus, and the pair served Caracalla during the emperor's campaigns in the East.
Despite the inexperience of the leaders of the rebel army, Macrinus was defeated.

Marcus Opellius Macrinus was a prefect in the Praetorian Guards, and became emperor himself, briefly and fairly harmlessly, upon the completion of his deed.
Macrinus apparently had one of Caracalla's own bodyguards, Centurian Martialis (whose brother had been one of the emperor's victims) kill him on April 4th, 207, and to add insult to injury, did it on the emperor's birthday, and while he was, er, relieving himself.
Juan de Mariana cited this case and the preceding one in his famous 1598 defense of tyrannicide that was to fall into discredit (and to cast odium upon his fellow Jesuits as a whole) in 1610, with the assassination of French King Henry IV by a lone nut.
