Mini Review of David Wishart (FalcoPhiles)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Marcus Corvinus' first job as amateur detective is in the novel Ovid, where he is asked by Ovid's stepdaughter, Perilla Rufia, to arrange for the poet's ashes to be brought back from his place of exile.
In Germanicus, Marcus Corvinus is commissioned by the aging Empress Livia (the late Augustus' wife, and Tiberius' mother) to investigate the death of wonder-boy Germanicus.
This means that Corvinus and his wife Perilla have had to return to Rome from their voluntary exile in Athens (the reasons are to do with Corvinus' dangerous knowledge).

Marcus hates politics but becomes unwillingly involved when his latest investigation proves the attack on Parthian Price Phraates.
The mystery unfolds as Marcus moves from conversation to conversation, uncovering a web of deceit from his `paymasters' that infuriates him but reveals a lot about multiple motives and secret dealings in the Roman/Parthian underworld until he finally realises that the `murder' wasn't a murder at all.
David Wishart has settled down with his irreverant Corvinus mysteries and anyone who likes the overly carefree Claudia Seferius of Marilyn Todd will finds an equally affable character in Corvinus whose straight talking, justice loving sleuth cuts through Rome with an alacrity that is hard to put down.

Harvard University Press: Catullus. Tibullus. Pervigilium Veneris by Catullus
Catullus (Gaius Valerius, 84–54 BCE), of Verona, went early to Rome, where he associated not only with other literary men from Cisalpine Gaul but also with Cicero and Hortensius.
The third book consists of a miscellany of poems from the archives of Messalla; it is very doubtful whether any come from the pen of Tibullus himself.
But a special interest attaches to a group of them which concern a girl called Sulpicia: some of the poems are written by her lover Cerinthus, while others purport to be her own composition.

Tangled Web UK Review - Parthian Shot by David Wishart May 2004   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Parthians are odd folk, it seems, their customs and mores very different from those of first century Rome; and as the latter are in turn somewhat different from those of the 21st century, the Parthians seem strange indeed.
With their rigid society and a love of luxury they are a challenging group of people for the informal and somewhat iconoclastic Marcus Corvinus to be dealing with, but predictably he is not in any way fazed.
Needless to say Marcus gets a handle on exactly what is happening, somewhat to the dismay of certain of the counter-counter- plotters (who in general turn out to be the good guys, though it's often hard to be sure of this).

Wishart's use of the terms was initially somewhat confusing and I believe that he would have served his readers and the story better had he used the terms with which almost all people who would buy his books would be familiar.
'Ovid', the first one of the series featuring Marcus Valerius Messalla Corvinus as an upper class Roman detective sets the plot for the subsequent books, 'Germanicus', 'Sejanus' and 'The Lydian Baker', giving new interpretations to known political misteries in the reign of Tiberius, all of it with humor and a very sarcastic (even explicit) language.

However Marcus spends the few days running up to Saturnalia picking his way through Rome's murky politics and assorted colorful characters with a dry wit that makes for fluid reading.
All this, mixed in with Marcus' daily home trials, epitomised in this novel by a very amusing episodic dealings with Perilla's latest fad of a water clock and the delightful continuing development of the character of Bathyllus, means that Last Rites is another excellent offering from Wishart.
