Marcus Velleius Paterculus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although his praenomen is given as Marcus by Priscian, some modern scholars identify him with Gaius Velleius Paterculus, whose name occurs in an inscription on a north African milestone (C.I.L. Viii.
The repetitions, redundancies, and slovenliness of expression may be partly due to the haste with which (as the author frequently states) it was written.
The inflated rhetoric, the straining after effect by means of hyperbole, antithesis and epigram, belong firmly to the Silver Age, of which Paterculus is the earliest example.

 Velleius Paterculus
In those days, Paterculus' now deservedly famous description of the conflict between the Romans and the Germanic tribes, which culminates in his account of the battle in the Teutoburg Forest, seemed remarkably relevant to the conflict between the German reformer Marten Luther and the Roman Catholic church.
Paterculus is also indebted to the Roman historian Sallustius (86-34), who stated that the fall of Carthage in 146 had been the most important turning point in the history of Rome.
Marcus Vinicius and any other senator reading the Roman History knew that Augustus was responsible for the last fourteen years of civil war, that the power of the magistrates was not restored to former limits but simply curtailed, and that the monarch had restored the republic in form only.

Some blemishes of style, particularly the clumsy and involved structure of his sentences, may perhaps be ascribed to insufficient literary training.
The inflated rhetoric, the strain~ ing after effect by means of hyperbole, antithesis and epigram, mark the degenerate taste of the Silver Age, of which Paterculus is the earliest example.
He purposed to write a fuller history of the later period, which should include the civil war between Caesar and Pompey and the wars of Tiberius; but there is no evidence that he carried out this intention.
