In the beginning, the name Mardan was given to a small area after the name of Pir Mardan Shah, a prominent religious figure.
The area constituting Mardan district is part of Peshawar valley, which first appears in history as part of Gandhara Kingdom.
Until 1937, Mardan district was a part of Peshawar district.

MARDAN/GILGIT/MIRPUR, Aug 6: Twenty more bodies were recovered from Kalpani nullah on Sunday, bringing the death toll in the Mardan bridge collapse to 44, while elsewhere in the NWFP, six members of a family were killed when a house in Malagori tehsil of the Khyber Agency succumbed to heavy rains.
According to local administration in Mardan, rescue teams comprising armymen and local divers, recovered 20 more bodies from Kalpani nullah as search continued on the second day of the bridge collapse.
He announced the release of Rs1 million to the district government and compensation of Rs100,000 each for the deceased and Rs50,000 each for the injured.

MARDAN, Aug 23: The People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPP) and Awami National Party (ANP) have decided to field joint candidates on the three National and eight provincial assemblies seats of Mardan.
It may be added that the late Amirzada Khan was a prominent lawyer of Mardan and was nominated presidential candidate by the NAP against Chaudhry Fazl Elahi in 1973.
