Mare Australe is located in the southeastern hemisphere of the moon.
The basin containing the mare is of the Pre-Nectarian epoch, while the actual mare material is of the Upper Imbrian epoch.
Notice the crater Jenner in the middle of the photo, this is an Imbrian crater that was later filled with mare basalt.

Mare Australe (the "southern sea") is a lunar mare located in the southeastern hemisphere of the Moon.
It is 603 miles in diameter, overlapping the near and far sides of the Moon.
The Australe basin was formed in the Pre-Nectarian[?] epoch, while the mare material inside formed in the Upper Imbrian[?] epoch.

Mare Cimmerium was prominent (3-4/10) and mottled preceding the CM with Tritonis Sinus on the CM itself.
Mare Austale was dusky to dull (4-5/10) and mottled.
Mare Sirenum appeared dark to dusky (3-4/10) and mottled on the CM (Caralis Fons (4/10) was noted along it's southern border).

Mare Australe is darker region near the edge of the lunar face and was slightly more visible this night because of libration.
Projection makes Mare Australe look like a long scar but, face on, it is appears more like a circular ring of smaller, filled basins.
Mare Smythii is darker region near the edge of the lunar face.

Mare Boreum and Scandia appeared dusky (4/10) to the north adjacent to an extremely bright (9/10) North Polar Hood (NPH).

The topmost dark grey area is Mare Serenitatis, below which is Mare Tranquillitatis (Sea of Tranquility) the three other lunar seas (from right to left) are; Crisium, Foecunditatis, and Nectaris.
Just to the right edge of the moon can be seen Mare Humboldtianum to the upper right, and Mare Marginis and Smyth II at about the 4 o'clock position.
The two craters directly above Mare Nectaris are Theophilus (with the "bullseye" in the center) and Cryillus.

Australe is an 880 km wide circle defined by mare lava flooding of most of the craters inside the circle and essentially no flooding on those outside.
Australe is an ancient basin - presumably its original multi-ring structure was destroyed by later impacts and/or buried by rising magmas.

The Lunar maria (singular: mare) are large, dark, basaltic plains on Earth's Moon, formed by ancient basaltic flood eruptions caused by extremely large meteoroid impacts.
They were dubbed maria, Latin for "seas", by early astronomers who mistook them for actual seas.

Mare Australe is a rather vague collection of dark spots in the south-eastern libration zone.
As far as this picture is concerned, the mare extends from Oken in the north to Hanno in the south and from Brisbane E and Peirescius D in the west to the eastern limb.
Also shown in this picture is the southern end of the Rheita Valley, the northern part of which is shown in my pictures of Rheita and Metius.

Mare Humboltianum is sort of the 'Mare Orientale of the eastern limb'.
I love Rukl's description of Mare Humboltianum: "Madler gave Humboldt's name to this formation because he recognized a symbolic parallel between Humboldt's explorations of unknown terrestrial continents and the way that this lunar mare seems to form a link between the known and the unknown hemispheres of the Moon." Very cool.

Mare Cimmerium is very well resolved and so is Mare Tyrrhenum.
Solis Lacus and Mare Erythraeum is visible on the upper part of Mars.

It don’t see any change with Mare Humboldtianum, which I would expect.
Last night, 11 Dec, I observed for a while and the limb maria, particularly Australe, offered some fascinating sites, in addition to the mountains in and surrounding Mare Imbrium.
