Mare Cognitum (the "sea that has become known") is a lunar mare located in a basin or large crater which sits in the second ring of the Procellarum basin.
The basin material is of the Lower Imbrian epoch, while the basaltic mare material is of the Upper Imbrian epoch.
To the northwest of the mare is the Montes Riphaeus mountain range, part of the rim of the buried crater or basin containing the mare.

Mare Australe (the "southern sea") is a lunar mare located in the southeastern hemisphere of the Moon.
The Australe basin was formed in the Pre-Nectarian epoch, while the mare material inside formed in the Upper Imbrian epoch.
The selenographic coordinates of this mare are 38.9° S, 93.0° E. The eastern half of the mare lies on the far side of the Moon, although it can be viewed in its entirety during periods of favorable libration.

Fra Mauro formation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is a widespread hilly geological area covering large portions of the lunar surface around Mare Imbrium, and is thought to be composed of ejecta from the impact which formed the mare.
The southern edge of Mare Insularum extends between the craters Lansberg and Fra Mauro.
The lower half of the section is occupied by Mare Cognitum.

The fact that the western edge of Chi is straight-sided - as is to a lesser degree the ridges to the west - suggests that a graben (a fault-bounded linear depression) may occur on the left side of Chi.

Fra Mauro is the worn remnant of a walled lunar plain.
It is part of the surrounding Fra Mauro formation, being located to the northeast of Mare Cognitum and southeast of Mare Insularum.
Attached to the southern rim are the co-joined Bonpland and Parry craters, which intrude into the formation forming inward-bulging walls.

Whether in the mare or in the terra materials of the crater wall, the morphology and geometry of the ridge suggest that viscous material was squeezed out along a fault (?) plane that dips gently westward.
The dark hills lie within a westward bulge of one mare ridge, the two bright hills interrupt another ridge, and the crater is intersected by a third ridge.
The complex may be a densely cratered block of terrae that was partly inundated by the lavas of Mare Cognitum and subsequently blanketed by dark volcanic ejecta.

We may assume then that all the larger impact craters that ever formed on the upper part of the mare surface have been retained and that their relative abundances in different areas are a measure of the relative age of those areas.
Among those proposed are (1) intrusion of deep-seated, postmare dikes and laccoliths, with some extrusion; (2) compressional buckling caused by sagging of comical mare surfaces; (3) buckling at the fronts of lava flows; (4) autointrusion of molten subcrustal mare lava forming laccoliths and squeeze-ups; (5) thrust faulting; and (6) drag folding along deep-seated transcurrent faults.
The elevations of the mare surfaces probably mimic the variable depth of the buried floor of the Fecunditatis basin.

Older basalts occur preferentially along the northwestern margin of Oceanus Procellarum and in the southeastern regions of the studied area, i.e., in Mare Cognitum and Mare Nubium.

The Lunar maria (singular: mare) are large, dark, basaltic plains on Earth's Moon, formed by ancient basaltic flood eruptions caused by extremely large meteoroid impacts.
They were dubbed maria, Latin for "seas", by early astronomers who mistook them for actual seas.
