Some of the irregular features in the south polar cap's outline, which early observers believed to be mountains, are actually depressed areas associated with a large impact basin that straddles the south pole of the planet.

Mare Sirenium and Mare Cimmerium were the most prominent feature running across the southern hemisphere, but when the seeing snapped in Mare Chromium and the Eridani basin were also distinct, along with mottling in Aonius Sinus.

Mare Erythraeum broke into an intricately striped and mottled expanse, while along the region between Margaritifer Sinus and Aurorae Sinus, a series of round spots hung, pendant-like, and straggled - appearing windblown -- into wispy streaks.
As Tharsis, then Solis Lacus and Mare Erythraeum, slipped farther and farther around the limb, our early-evening views of the planet came to be dominated by the serpentine curve of Sinus Sabaeus and the unmistakable, though foreshortened, profile of Syrtis Major.
The bright band extending between Juventae Fons and Coprates appeared superficially as a double canal, but this impression was soon removed by close examination, and we were quite sure that this feature is one of those Barnard had in mind when he wrote in his observing book on September 3, 1894:
