Mare Frigoris (the "sea of cold") is located just north of Mare Imbrium, and stretches east to north of Mare Serenitatis.
The mare is in the outer rings of the Procellarum basin.
The basin material surrounding the mare is of the Lower Imbrian[?] epoch, while the eastern mare material is of the Upper Imbrian[?] epoch, and the western mare material is of the Eratosthenian[?] epoch.

 Mare Frigoris
Most of the maria are, to a greater or lesser extent, circular or oval - the result of large impact basins being filled with lava.
The Mare Frigoris, seen here in part, is unusual is being a long ribbon of lava.
The full size original of this can be seen in his large annotated collection of images, Poyet's Celestial HyperBook.

Mare Frigoris is a wide area of dark lava located to the North of Mare Imbrium.
Further north, there are many interesting craters to be seen bordering the Mare, one of the largest of which is J. Herschel, quite a battered crater with pretty disintegrated walls, and therefore relatively old.
The crater floor is quite rough in comparison with the smooth Mare to the south.

Mare Marginis is located on the eastern limb of the Moon, directly north and bordering the Smythii cryptomafic area.
Mare Marginis is associated with the pre-Nectarian Marginis basin.
For the thickness of the Korolev cryptomafic deposit, the average mare thickness (400 m) of the eastern and western maria [De Hon and Waskom, 1976; De Hon, 1979] is assumed.

Its prominence is due to a combination of these factors and its fine position in a smooth Mare just north of the lunar equator.
Beyond the uplands to the north of the Mare Imbrium, the long, narrow Mare Frigoris continues to be revealed.
Another two Crisium widths further south, the slightly larger class 1 crater Bullialdus, with its large central peak, is conspicuous in the middle of the western edge of the dark Mare Nubium.

They also explain why small mare patches are grouped together on the farside.
Thus, mare volcanism is most likely inside these basins, especially where younger craters have dug into the basin floor.

ENGLISH VERSION: On the margins of the northern regions of the Moon extended along the parallels is the Frigoris sea which with a surface of 251.000 kmq in its east field it is in proximity of two moutainous chains: the Alps and the Caucasus.
Passing to the north side of the Frigoris sea we does not notice craters structures of particular interest but a crater series whose diameter is gone around medium between 30/40 km but some exceptions in particular for the regions situated still more to the north.
The adjacent plains with the Frigoris sea are to the West the small sinus Roris beyond which it is entered in the large oceanus Procellarum; the Lacus Mortis (surface of 17,000 kmq) place instead in proximity of the Southeastern extremity of the Frigoris sea.

 Lunar mare
The Lunar maria (singular: mare) are large, dark, basaltic plains on Earth's Moon, formed by ancient basaltic flood eruptions caused by extremely large meteoroid impacts.
They were dubbed maria, Latin for "seas", by early astronomers who mistook them for actual seas.
A related set of features are the Lunar lacus, Latin for "lake", which are smaller basaltic plains of similar origin:

The nearside mare complex embraces all the nearside maria except Crisium in one interlinked area of relatively easy to traverse terrain and represents 39% of nearside.
This means perhaps 200 miles or so from the North coast of Mare Frigoris to the nearest likely north polar ice field, and 900 miles or so from the South coast of Mare Nubium to the nearest plausible south polar ice field.
