Mare Marginis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mare Marginis is a lunar mare that lies on the very edge of the lunar nearside.
Thus, Mare Marginis seems to mark a low-lying region of the highlands where mare lavas were just able to reach the surface.
The major crater to the north of Marginis is Al-Biruni, with Ibn Yunus to the southeast and Goddard to the northwest.

Mare Imbrium, Latin for "Sea of Showers" or "Sea of Rains", is a vast lunar mare filling a basin on Earth's Moon.
The mare material is thought to be about 5 km deep, giving the Imbrium Basin a total depth of 12 km; it is thought that the original crater left by the Imbrium impact was as much as 100 km deep, but the floor of the basin bounced back upward immediately afterward.
Mare Imbrium is between 3700 million and 3900 million years old, and is the youngest of the lunar maria except for Mare Orientale.

Mare Smythii - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mare Smythii (latin for "Sea of William Henry Smyth") is a lunar mare located along the equator on the easternmost edge of the lunar near side.
The Smythii basin where the mare is located is of the Pre-Nectarian epoch, while the surrounding features are of the Nectarian system.
The mare material, which make up the floor of the mare, is a high alumious basalt, and consists of Upper Imbrian basalt covered by Eratosthenian basalt.

The surface of this mare displays some swirling, higher (The ratio of reflected to incident light) albedo deposits that are similar to the (additional info and facts about Reiner Gamma) Reiner Gamma feature on the (additional info and facts about Oceanus Procellarum) Oceanus Procellarum.
Other possible explanations for the formation include a ((astronomy) a relatively small extraterrestrial body consisting of a frozen mass that travels around the sun in a highly elliptical orbit) cometary impact, venting of volcanic gases, or just normal surface markings that are shielded from space weathering due to the magnetic field.

Possible sources of the secondaries north of Mare Marginis include the craters Gauss, Lomonosov, and Neper, and the basins Humboldtianum and Orientale; the latter is exactly antipodal to the occurrence and a theoretically reasonable source (Moore and others, 1974).
This overlap of mare material by Imbrian crater materials is rare on the Moon and suggests that the older mare unit is older than most or all near-side mare material.
The older unit is mapped in the Marginis basin and in large craters in and near the Lomonosov-Fleming basin (see photo IV-17H to compare the two mare units and light-colored plains and terra units).

This is a very appropriate name, for this patch of dark mare material is at the visible margin of the Moon, but its also only marginally deserving the name "mare" and unlike most mare, there is almost no evidence that it is inside an impact basin.
The mare itself covers a small area between Goddard and Neper, and those craters and a few others are filled with dark lava.
According to Clementine altimetry, the floor of Mare Marginis is 3 km lower than the average lunar radius, and there is also a small mascon - a mass concentration - so perhaps there is a basin somewhere under Marginis after all.
