The great depth of this mare beneath the nearby highlands probably explains why mare units are so rare on the lunar farside.
Such a contrast in mare and highland elevations also exists on the nearside.
Thus, while large impact basins are found on both the nearside and farside, large maria are mostly found on the nearside.

The unequal distribution of mare materials is shown to advantage on this equal area projection.
Also clearly evident is the tendency of mare materials to be concentrated within the margins of large multiringed circular basins.

Mare Moscoviense, Mare Ingenii, Jules Verne, Gagarin, Galois, Oppenheimer, Von Karman, Poincare, Mendeleev, Mach, Landau, Hertzsprung, Korolev, Van de Graaff, Apollo - the names are fascinating, taken from astronauts, astronomers, other scientists, alongside those from an occasional project (Apollo) or place (Moscoviense - Latin for Muscovy).
By contrast, there is little sign of the old romantic Latin descriptions (Mare Nubium) with which the familiar Earth side of the moon has long been identified.
There seems to be a universal and deep-rooted love for naming things, says Crystal, so much so that people have admitted naming their cars, word processors, house plants, kitchen implements, and on the "luna-tic" fringe, even their toothbrushes.

The Lunar maria (singular: mare) are large, dark, basaltic plains on Earth's Moon, formed by ancient basaltic flood eruptions caused by extremely large meteoroid impacts.
They were dubbed maria, Latin for "seas", by early astronomers who mistook them for actual seas.
